PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- Shawnee State (4-6, 0-0) defeated Central State in five sets at Waller Gymnasium Friday night.
Set 1
Shawnee State jumped out to a 10-6 lead over the Marauders in the opening frame, highlighted by kills from
Camille McIntosh,
Natalie Reida,
Kaylee McInnis and
Katelynn Boerger, and an ace by
Whytney Faulkner.
The Bears extended their lead to 18-9 throughout the middle of the set behind kills by
Bree Hicks, McInnis, Faulkner and Reida.
Leading 19-14, Shawnee State scored the final six points of the frame to win, 25-14, and take a 1-0 match lead.
Set 2
Central State took a 3-0 advantage to begin the second set before the Bears rallied to take a 13-8 lead, with kills from Hicks, McInnis and Boerger.
The Marauders fought back to cut Shawnee State's advantage to 17-15, but the Bears responded with a 4-0 run to take a 21-15 lead.
Shawnee State closed the frame on a 4-3 run to win, 25-18, and take a 2-0 match lead.
Set 3
Central State took a 6-3 lead to open the third set, but Shawnee State rallied to tie the frame at 7-7.
The Marauders retook the lead, 23-18, before Shawnee State went on a 4-0 run to cut the deficit to 23-22.
Despite the Bears' rally, Central State scored two of the final three points to win, 25-23, and force a fifth set.
Set 4
The Bears and Marauders traded points to begin the fourth set, with neither team holding more than a two-point advantage until Central State went on a 4-0 run to take an 11-7 lead.
Shawnee State fought back throughout the middle of the frame to take a 12-11 lead and remained even with the Marauders until the match was tied at 23-23.
With the match on the line, Central State scored the final two points of the frame to win, 25-23, and send the match to a fifth set.
Set 5
The Marauders jumped out to a 3-1 advantage to open the fifth set before Shawnee State went on a 4-1 run, highlighted by kills from McInnis and Reida, to take a 5-4 lead.
With the set tied at 7-7, the Bears scored six of the next seven points to take a 13-8 advantage, highlighted by kills from Reida, McInnis and
Jalynn West.
Leading 13-9, McInnis recorded back-to-back kills to win the set, 15-9, and defeat Central State in five sets.
Bears by the Numbers
Kaylee McInnis paced Shawnee State with a season-high 15 kills, including five in the fifth set.
Katelynn Boerger posted a season-high 13 kills, marking the first time the sophomore has reached double figures this season.
Natalie Reida recorded seven total blocks, tying her season high. Reida remains second in the Mountain East Conference with 34 total blocks on the season.
Jalynn West dished out 26 assists and ranks second in the MEC with 207 on the season. West also finished with 15 digs, the second-highest total on the team.
Cally Carpenter tallied 17 assists, finishing two shy of her season-high 19.
Graci Claxon finished with a season-high 22 digs, five more than her previous mark of 17.
