PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- Shawnee State football has named Jimmy Peyton its wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator.

Peyton, an Ironton, Ohio, native, was the starting quarterback on the Fighting Tigers' 1999 OHSAA Division IV state runner-up team before leading Joliet Junior College to the NJCAA national championship in 2002. In the Wolves' perfect 11-0 season in 2002, Peyton was named the team's offensive MVP after throwing for 2,251 yards and 25 touchdowns.

The 2002 Joliet football team featured future NFL talent in Super Bowl champion Kelvin Hayden and two-time Super Bowl champion Rob Ninkovich.

Peyton spent 10 years (2006-16) serving in the United States Army as a staff sergeant, including multiple combat deployments.

Mark Snyder, Shawnee State's head football coach, said Peyton's background across multiple levels of football will bring valuable experience and perspective to the Bears' program.

"Coach Peyton is a local guy who is tied into our region as a former head coach and brings extensive junior college playing and recruiting experience to Shawnee State," Snyder said. "His offensive philosophy fits what we are looking to do on offense."

In 2017, as the wide receivers coach at Arizona Western College, Peyton coached in the NJCAA National Championship Game, where the now-defunct Matadors fell to East Mississippi, 31-28.

Peyton served as the wide receivers coach at Garden City Community College during the 2019 season, helping the Broncbusters post an 8-3 record.

In January 2020, Peyton was named head football coach at Missouri Military Academy, where he served through the 2021 season.

Peyton became the head football coach at Warren High School in 2022. Peyton led the Warriors to a 7-4 record in 2024, marking just the third time in the previous 25 years that the program recorded seven or more wins. The Warriors also won the Twin State League outright, marking the program's first league title in 29 years and first outright league championship in 39 years. For his efforts, Peyton was named Twin State League Coach of the Year.

While at Warren, Peyton's efficient offensive system produced numerous individual school records and accolades, including the program's highest single-season and career completion percentages, the fourth-most career passing yards in just two seasons, the all-time leaders in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns and two of the top 10 all-time scorers. Defensively, Peyton helped develop the program's first District Player of the Year and the school's all-time interceptions leader.

In three seasons at the helm, Peyton led the Warriors to a 15-16 record.

In 2025, Peyton was named the head football coach at Logan High School, where he led the Chieftains for one season.
