Shawnee State Secures First Win of Season in 3-0 Sweep of Kentucky State

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Shawnee State (1-1, 0-0) earned its first win of the 2026 season Friday evening, sweeping Kentucky State 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-17) at the William Exum Center.

Set 1

Despite going down 2-0 early in the first, Shawnee State erupted for nine-consecutive points to lead Kentucky State 9-2.

The Thorobreds cut their deficit to five at 10-5, however, the Bears continued to dominate the set with a 10-5 run to lead 20-10.

Shawnee State closed out the set on a 5-4 run to claim the opener 25-14.

Camille Hall and Katelynn Boerger both recorded three kills in the first, while Natalie Reida and Bree Hicks each added two.

Set 2

The second set began similarly to the first, with Kentucky State jumping out to a 4-0 lead over Shawnee State.

The Thorobreds extended their lead to 10-5, however, the Bears battled back to tie the set 15-15.

After going down 17-15, Shawnee State scored four in a row on kills from McInnis and Reida to lead 19-17.

Holding a 20-19 lead, the Bears scored the final five points of the set to claim a 25-19 victory and take a 2-0 match lead.

Set 3

Shawnee State jumped out to a 6-1 lead over Kentucky State in the third set behind kills from McInnis, Boerger and Hall, maintaining its advantage into the middle of the set at 13-8.

The Thorobreds fought back to cut the Bears' lead to 14-13, but Shawnee State responded with five consecutive points to extend its advantage to 19-13.

With kills from McInnis, Hall, Reida and Jalynn West, the Bears closed out the frame on a 6-4 run to claim the set, 25-17, and complete the 3-0 sweep.


Bears by the Numbers

Kaylee McInnis led the Shawnee State with nine kills for the second game in a row. The freshman also paced the Bears with four aces and finished second with 10 digs.

Katelynn Boerger finished just behind McInnis with seven kills, and co-led the team with two blocks alongside Natalie Reida.

Cally Carpenter dished out a match-high 19 assists, while Jalynn West finished with 13.

Mylee Gleim paced Shawnee State with 11 digs in her second collegiate match.
