FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Shawnee State (1-2, 0-0) fell in four sets (26-24, 16-25, 19-25, 25-27) against Young Harris on Saturday at the William Exum Center.
Set 1
Shawnee State started strong Friday morning, jumping out to a 6-1 lead over Young Harris behind three kills from
Bree Hicks and one each from
Katelynn Boerger and
Camille Hall.
The Mountain Lions battled back through middle of the set to tie the score at 15-15.
The Bears briefly took a 17-15 advantage before Young Harris answered with a 6-0 run to take a 21-17 lead.
Shawnee State rallied to tie the set at 22-22, but Young Harris quickly retook the lead at 24-22.
Behind kills from Hall and
Natalie Reida, the Bears closed the set on a 4-0 run to claim the 26-24 victory and take a 1-0 match lead.
Set 2
Young Harris took a 10-5 lead to begin the second set and carried that advantage into the late stages of the frame at 17-11
The Bears began to chip away at the Mountain Lions' lead with a 3-1 run to cut the deficit to 18-14, but Young Harris responded with five consecutive points to extend its advantage to 23-14.
Shawnee State benefited from back-to-back kills from Hicks and Reida, but Young Harris rallied for the final two points to claim the set, 25-16, and even the match at 1-1.
Set 3
Young Harris started the third set similarly to the second, opening the frame with a 10-6 run.
Following a kill from Kaylee McInnis to cut the deficit to 10-7, the Mountain Lions responded with an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 18-7.
The Bears rallied with a 12-6 run to cut the deficit to 24-19, but a kill from Young Harris ended the set at 25-19 and gave the Mountain Lions a 2-1 match lead.
Set 4
Despite falling down 9-5 early in the frame, Shawnee State battled back to tie the set at 11-11.
The Bears took a 14-13 lead behind back-to-back kills from Hall and Boerger, however, Young Harris answered with a 5-2 run to lead 18-16.
Shawnee State rallied once more with a 3-0 run, highlighted by a kill from Hicks and an ace from Addy Brewster, to take a 19-18 lead.
The Bears and Mountain Lions traded points through a 25-25 tie, with neither team holding a lead larger than one point during the stretch.
Young Harris capitalized on back-to-back Shawnee State miscues to claim the fourth set, 27-25, and secure the 3-1 match victory.
Bears by the Numbers
Bree Hicks was the only Bear to reach double-digit kills, leading Shawnee State with 12.
Camille Hall recorded eight kills and a match-high five blocks.
Jalynn West led the team with 19 assists for the second time in three matches, while Cally Carpenter finished with 11.
Mylee Gleim paced the Bears in digs for the second consecutive match, recording a season-high 19.
