Box Score PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- Shawnee State (22-7, 12-4) is moving on to the River States Conference Tournament semifinals following its 56-49 quarterfinal win over IU Kokomo.
Shawnee State opened the first quarter on an 11-0 run, however, IU Kokomo closed the period on an 8-4 run, trailing the Bears 15-8 at the end of the frame.
Shawnee State extended its first-half lead in the second quarter, outscoring the Cougars 14-9 to lead 29-17 at halftime.
Kyla Torok led all scorers at the break with 10 points.
Neither team gained ground in the third quarter, as the Bears and Cougars scored 10 points apiece, leaving Shawnee State ahead 39-27 entering the fourth.
IU Kokomo opened the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run over the first three minutes to cut the Bears' lead to 39-35 with 6:52 remaining.
Shawnee State answered with an 8-4 run over the next four minutes to lead the Cougars 47-39 with 2:58 to play.
IU Kokomo outscored Shawnee State 10-9 over the final three minutes, but it wasn't enough as the Bears held on for the 56-49 quarterfinal win.
Kyla Torok led Shawnee State with 12 points, shooting 6-of-8 from the field.
Laken Williams finished with 10 points, extending her double-digit scoring streak to nine games. Her scoring average has increased from 6.7 to 9.0 points per game during that span.
Ra'Khyia Prince posted eight points, while the trio of
Emily Maynard,
Miyoshi Ellis and
Lilly-May Walker scored six points apiece.
