(RV) SSU MBB Knocks Off Rio Grande 64-58 in Latest In-State Rivalry Matchup

Box Score RIO GRANDE, Ohio — Shawnee State (11-4, 3-0) remained unbeaten in River States Conference play Tuesday evening, grinding out a 64-58 road win over Rio Grande at Newt Oliver Arena. The Bears have now won back-to-back games against the RedStorm, along with 10 of the last 13.

Oddly enough, Shawnee State has also won seven-consecutive games over Rio Grande at Newt Oliver Arena, with the RedStorm's last home-win over the Bears coming on Dec. 2, 2015 by way of a 86-53 final.

As for the latest installment of this in-state rivalry, Shawnee State jumped out to 33-24 lead in the first half.

The Bears were led in scoring by Jason Steele, who finished the half with eight points on 4-of-5 shooting while grabbing three rebounds.

Tyreon Payne scored six points in the first half, while Kiante Williams and Jareon Mayo each contributed six points.

Shawnee State shot 46.2% from the field, 40% from three-point range and a perfect 7-of-7 from the free-throw line in the first half.

Despite Shawnee State taking a near double-digit lead into the break, Rio Grande wasn't done just yet.

After a back-and-forth second half, Rio Grande went on an 11–3 run from the 5:26 mark to the 1:47 mark -- tying the game at 58-58.

Despite this, Shawnee State would finish on a 6-0 run over the final 90 seconds of regulation as El Sieger, Kiante Williams and Jason Steele collectively shot a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line, cementing the night's 64-58 final in favor of the Bears.

Jason Steele finished tied with Rio Grande's Delon McCloud to lead all scorers with 14 points. Steele shot 5-of-6 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.

Tyreon Payne scored 11 points on 3-of-6 shooting (5-of-5 from the foul line).

Kiante Williams added 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting (2-of-2 from the free-throw line), grabbed four rebounds and blocked a shot.

Daniel Rosenber scored nine points, El Sieger added seven points, and both Ahmadou Aw and Jareon Mayo notched five points apiece.

As a team, Shawnee State shot 47.7% from the field and 17-of-18 (94.4%) from the free-throw line.
