Box Score RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- Shawnee State (11-4, 2-1) fell to No. 8 Rio Grande, 72-59, Tuesday night, snapping the Bears' four-game winning streak and handing them their first River States Conference loss of the season.
No. 8 Rio Grande got off to a hot start in Tuesday's conference matchup with Shawnee State, as the RedStorm took a 4-2 lead with 8:09 to play in the opening frame and failed to relinquish it for the remainder of the night.
Rio Grande led the Bears 19-12 at the end of the first quarter.
Shawnee State would cut into Rio Grande's first-half lead in the second quarter, as the Bears outpaced the RedStorm 12-10 in the frame, bringing Rio's halftime lead over SSU to 29-24.
Kyla Torok led all scorers in the first half with eight points on 3-of-5 shooting (2-of-4 from the free-throw line), with five rebounds and a block.
Miyoshi Ellis finished behind Torok with seven points on 3-of-8 shooting (1-of-2 from three-point range), along with one steal and one rebound.
Rio Grande steadily nursed their lead in the second half, winning the third and fourth quarters by scores of 22-19 and 21-16, respectively.
Come the evening's final horn, Rio Grande led Shawnee State 72-59, which would prove to be the game's final.
Jonilyah Chambers led SSU in second-half scoring with seven points on 3-of-9 shooting (1-of-1 from the free-throw line), while
Lauren Hawthorne and
TK Catchings each pitched in six points.
Overall on the night, Shawnee State shot 33.8% from the field, while Rio Grande shot 44.4%.
Rio Grande's Marlee Grinstead led all scorers with 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting (6-of-8 from the free-throw line), while
Kyla Torok led Shawnee State with 12 points, seven rebounds and one block.
Miyoshi Ellis also finished in double figures as the senior scorerd 11 points and dished out three assists.
Jonilyah Chambers scored nine points with two rebounds and an assist, and
TK Catchings finished with seven points and six rebounds.
Lauren Hawthorne scored six points and grabbed five boards, while
Onyinyechi Sanders scored five points in her first game since the
season opener against Northwestern Ohio.
