(RV) SSU MBB Earns Second Overtime Victory, Defeats IU Southeast 79-74

Box Score NEW ALBANY, Ind. -- Shawnee State (16-4, 8-0) earned its second overtime win in four games Saturday, defeating IU Southeast 79-74. The Bears have now won seven straight games and remain unbeaten in River States Conference play.

Both teams traded runs in the first half, with Shawnee State holding a lead as large as eight points.

SSU and IU Southeast were tied 31-all with 32 seconds left in the half before Rheyce DeBoard knocked down a midrange jumper to give the Bears a 33-31 lead at the break.

Jason Steele led Shawnee State in first-half scoring with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting, while coverting a pair of free throws.

Kiante Williams scored six points and grabbed a rebound, while Ahmadou Aw added five points.

IU Southeast opened up the second half with a 17-11 run over the first 10 minutes to lead Shawnee State 48-44 with 9:30 to play.

The Grenadiers held that four-point lead until 1:30 remained in regulation, when Tyreon Payne went on a personal 4-0 run to tie the game at 59-all and send it into overtime.

Payne scored 15 of the Bears' 26 second-half points, leading all scorers.

Jason Steele added five points and seven rebounds.

In overtime, Payne continued to dominate, scoring 12 more points -- including four in the final 14 seconds -- as Shawnee State outscored IU Southeast 20-15 in the extra period to secure the 79-74 road win.

Tyreon Payne, playing in his first game since the Bears' 64-58 win at Rio Grande on Jan. 6, led all scorers with a season-high 29 points on 9-of-19 shooting from the field and a perfect 11-of-11 from the free-throw line.

Jason Steele recorded his second double-double of the season, as the junior scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Kiante Williams added 11 points and four rebounds, while Ahmadou Aw scored eight points, accounted for seven steals and secured five rebounds.

Rheyce DeBoard scored seven points, collected six rebounds and dished out three assists.

Shawnee State MBB returns to action Wednesday, Jan. 28, when it travels to Beckley, West Virginia to face West Virginia Tech. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
