GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- The women's soccer program at Shawnee State got an equalizing goal from Shawnee State forward
Haynna Addy to tie a nonconference matchup against the Georgetown Tigers' women's soccer program at one goal apiece early in the first half of competition, but a late goal on a penalty kick by Georgetown's Bekah Clark forced the Bears to settle for a 2-1 defeat to the Tigers in a contest that was held at Toyota Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Despite falling behind early on, Shawnee State showcased early resolve, coming back from a 1-0 deficit in the fifth minute by scoring to tie the match at one apiece in the sixth. Following an offensive advance,
Robyn Drinkwater got a corner kick opportunity that found the feet of Addy in the box, with Addy sneaking the resulting shot past Georgetown goalkeeper Olivia York to tie the score.
From there, Shawnee State not only proved to be the better squad throughout the first half, but dominated play in doing so, ultimately getting seven of their 11 shots off in the game over the first 32 minutes of the match.
Lucie Ashkettle, who led the team with five shots on the day including three on goal, matched Georgetown's entire shot output by herself. The junior had two excellent opportunities on a free kick just outside of the right side of the box in the 18th minute and on an excellent move back inside in the 29th frame of action, but the 18th minute shot was saved by York while the 29th minute blast just grazed the crossbar as the ball landed high of the net.
Georgetown, meanwhile, struggled to generate any offensive attack -- as Shawnee State's team speed kept the Tigers from even crossing midfield for much of the first half. Georgetown crossed the 50 successfully just four times, total, in the first half -- but ultimately, the score stayed deadlocked at one heading into the halftime break. Unfortunately, second half play tightened up, and after a foul in the box, a penalty kick was awarded to the Tigers, giving Clark the opportunity to pounce with the game-winner.
With her goal in the sixth minute, Addy scored her 18th career goal at Shawnee State -- which puts the Chillicothe native in a tie for 13th all-time on the Shawnee State women's soccer program's career goals leaderboard. Addy needs just three more goals to move into a tie for 10th place all-time in program history in that category.
Shawnee State will look to move back on the right side of the win column Monday evening as the Bears (1-3) take on Cincinnati-Clermont (1-2) Monday evening at 7 p.m. The contest will be held at Shawnee Turf in Portsmouth.
