SSU soccer programs to host key doubleheader against West Virginia Tech Thursday

The men's and women's soccer programs at Shawnee State will each host a pair of major River States Conference matchups Thursday evening at Shawnee Turf in a pair of contests that will be critical to the postseason outlook for both programs -- as the women's soccer program (2-6-1, 1-0 River States Conference) plays West Virginia Tech (4-2-2, 1-0 River States Conference) at 5 p.m. Thursday, while the men's soccer program (5-1-2, 1-0 River States Conference) follows with its own home match against West Virginia Tech (6-0-2, 1-0 River States Conference) at 7:30 p.m.

WSOC: Shawnee State (2-6-1, 1-0 River States Conference vs. WV Tech (4-2-2, 1-0 River States Conference), 5 p.m., Shawnee Turf, Portsmouth, Ohio
  • Shawnee State has received scoring contributions in either goals or assists from nine different players this season -- with six of those nine players, including Lucie Ashkettle, Haynna Addy, Annie Coriell, Robyn Drinkwater, Anna Sas and Elizabeth Brown -- all scoring at least one goal in 2025.
  • Ashkettle, Addy and Coriell, who are all graduates of OHSAA Southeast District High Schools in Valley, Zane Trace and Wheelersburg respectively, each have three goals apiece.
  • Drinkwater leads the team with four assists.
  • Fifth-year senior and incoming transfer Avery Williams made a significant impact in Shawnee State's 4-0 victory over Indiana-Columbus as Williams, a native of Vandalia, Ohio and a graduate of Vandalia Butler High School, was credited with assists on each of SSU's last three goals in the win.
  • Defensively, Harlee Brand recorded her best career effort in goal, making 10 saves en route to a clean sheet for Shawnee State in its 4-0 win over Indiana-Columbus. Brand, who made eight saves in the first half of play alone, was named as the River States Conference's Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 29.
  • West Virginia Tech is led by 10 different scoring contributors and seven different goal-scorers in 2025 -- with sophomore midfielder Julia Silva (five goals), senior midfielder Nora Martin-Mora Segura (five goals) and freshman midfielder Rocio Gutierrez (one goal, four assists) heading up the offensive production.
  • Senior goalkeeper Sandra Garcia Quilez has made 29 saves this season in West Virginia Tech's eight matches in 2025.
MSOC: Shawnee State (5-1-2, 1-0 River States Conference) vs. WV Tech (6-0-2, 1-0 River States Conference), 7:30 p.m., Shawnee Turf, Portsmouth, Ohio
  • A dozen players have either scored or assisted at least once this season for the Shawnee State men's soccer program this season -- with 11 of those players scoring at least one goal for the Bears in 2025 in what has been a balanced unit from top to bottom.
  • Marco Riva, who finished with four goals and four assists in 2024, already has four goals and two assists in 2025 to lead Shawnee State in goals while placing in a tie for third on the squad in assists.
  • Alfie Maynard, Sei Aitoku and Sekou Mara each have two goals in 2025 as well, while Maynard and Theo Trindade have a team-leading three assists. Nikos Pontikis has two assists along with Riva.
  • Shawnee State goalkeeper Toby Forsythe won his second consecutive River States Conference Defensive Player of the Week Award and his third in 2025 with his play between the posts in Shawnee State's 3-0 victory over Indiana-Columbus. Forsythe has made 35 saves this season and has only allowed six goals en route to saving more than 85 percent of the shots that the Gahanna, Ohio native has faced in 2025.
  • Of its 97 shots as a team in 2025, Shawnee State has placed 54 balls on frame -- a .557 shots on goal percentage mark. Opponents, meanwhile, are being held to 48 shots on goal in 108 shot attempts -- a .444 shots on goal percentage.
  • Like Shawnee State, West Virginia Tech has a balanced offensive attack -- as 12 players currently have posted a goal or an assist with nine scoring a goal for WV Tech.
  • Freshman forwards Leny Duperray (four goals, one assist) and Julen Recalde (three goals) lead West Virginia Tech's offensive output. 
  • West Virginia Tech senior goalkeeper Luka Felix has faced just 30 shots in eight matches this season. He's made 24 saves for an 80 percent save mark.
