SSU men's golf sits fifth following opening day of RSC Fall Preview

DANIELS, W. Va. -- The men's golf program at Shawnee State, led by a three-over 75 and a top-12 showing from Logan Hughes in his own opening round of play at the River States Conference's Fall Preview, was able to secure a top-five showing as a team following the first day of competition at The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels, W. Va. on Monday.

Shawnee State, who shot an opening round 309 to place fifth in the 11-team field after the opening day of competition, was led by Hughes, whose three-over 75 led the Bears.

The senior from Flemingsburg, Ky. got out to a red-hot start, posting birdies on four of his first seven holes and notching pars on eight additional greens. Hughes birdied the first hole, a 425-yard par four, the second hole, a 520-yard par five, the fourth hole, a 370-yard par four, and the seventh hole, a 162-yard par three, en route to getting out on the right track from the get-go.

With his three-over 75, Hughes presently sits 11th in the 64-golfer field -- and sits just three strokes back of fourth place in the field.

Behind Hughes, Ross Ferrell also placed in the top-20 overall -- as the fellow senior's five-over has Ferrell sitting in an 11-way tie for 19th place.

The remaining four Bears who competed Monday all sit between the 30th to 40th place bubble as Trey Cracraft and Hunter Freeman -- the latter of whom competed as an individual -- sit in a five-way tie for 30th while Max Kearns is in the middle of a three-way tie for 35th on the leaderboard. Tanner Stevenson, who is in his own five-way tie at 38th place in the rundown, rounds out the field.

Shawnee State will be back in action Tuesday when the Bears compete in the second and final day of the River States Conference's Fall Preview at The Resort at Glade Springs.
