Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

SSU MSOC takes care of Indiana-Columbus, 3-0, in River States Conference GOW, RSC opener

COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Controlling the pace of play throughout much of its 90-minute road affair against River States Conference foe Indiana-Columbus, the Shawnee State men's soccer program got a game-opening goal from Sekou Mara in the 20th minute, two goals -- one in each half -- from senior standout Marco Riva -- and another solid effort from the defense in the Bears' 3-0 victory over the Crimson Pride Saturday evening in the River States Conference opener for both squads as well as the River States Conference's Game of the Week, which was held at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex in Columbus, Ind.

Shawnee State, who improved to 5-1-2 and 1-0 in the River States Conference with the victory, held homestanding Indiana-Columbus (3-5-1, 0-1 River States Conference) to eight shots on goal with Shawnee State goalkeeper Toby Forsythe saving every attempt that came his direction -- seven in all with a team save thrown in. Forsythe lowered his single-season goals-against-average mark, which is still tracking to obliterate the previous school record, to 0.81.

Along with the above, second-year Shawnee State head coach Stan Rodrigues was pleased with the resiliency of his entire unit, including Theo Trindade and Sebastian Saavadra Obokuhov, the latter of whom stepped up and took on a larger role with several players resting due to injury or illness.

"We faced a tough first opponent, but we are also missing a few players due to injuries or illness," Rodrigues said. "This team is resilient and focused, and it's always good to open conference play with a win. Marco and Theo and Sebastian were solid as well as the entire supporting cast. It doesn't take much to motivate a team that loves their futbol and each other. I'm proud to say that. Vamos OSOS!"

Mara posts second career goal

Getting an opportunity off of a corner kick early in the contest, a ball that was originally launched in the air by Marco Riva eventually found Théo Cavaleiro Trindade, who shuffled a ball off to the 6-2 Mara. The redshirt freshman fired the ball home from there to post his second career goal, with Trindade posting his third assist of 2025, the sixth of his career, and his 16th career point in Shawnee State's opening goal of the contest.

Riva strikes with two

Never shy about pulling the trigger on a shot opportunity, Shawnee State's Marco Riva found netting with two opportunities of his own in Saturday's win.

After two additional Shawnee State attempts were saved and two SSU runs were called for offsides between the 20th to 31st minutes of action, Riva struck in the 32nd with a difference-making goal that ultimately gave the Bears breathing room with Shawnee State taking a 2-0 advantage on Indiana-Columbus heading into the locker room.

Then, after back-to-back shots by Mara and Riva were saved by Indiana-Columbus goalkeeper Jacob Kasarda in the 49th minute, Riva came back at Kasarda five minutes later and proceeded to punch in his second goal of the contest in the 54th, giving the Bears a comfortable cushion to work with over the rest of the distance.

The two goals by Riva increased the senior's total at Shawnee State to 10 for his career -- and with six assists career-wise to boot, Riva now has 26 career points in a SSU uniform.

ADDITIONAL

Shawnee State (5-1-2, 1-0 River States Conference) has a major test ahead of it as the Bears will play host to West Virginia Tech (6-0-2, 1-0 River States Conference) in a RSC match that will have major implications on conference tournament seeding and, potentially, national ranking implications as well with both teams having enjoyed strong 2025 campaigns to this point.

West Virginia Tech defeated what was the No. 2-ranked team nationally in Cumberlands (Ky.), 4-2, but Shawnee State holds a win over Milligan, who was No. 20 when Shawnee State defeated the Buffaloes, 1-0, back on Aug. 30 -- an opponent that West Virginia Tech tied, 1-1, back the previous week on Aug. 23.

The matchup between SSU and WV Tech, which is part of a women's and men's soccer doubleheader that will see both women's squads play in the preceding match at 5 p.m., will see the men face off against one another Thursday, Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m. at Shawnee Turf in Portsmouth.
