SSU BB drops decision to Oakland City; to face Midway (Ky.) in consolation bracket Monday for opportunity to advance to RSC Championship Series

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- The baseball program at Shawnee State got a two-run home run from Mason Reid in the fourth inning and a leadoff triple from Wyatt Haupt that Haupt later scored on after a passed ball, but the Bears weren't able to stay with the Oakland City Mighty Oaks' baseball program as the Bears fell by a 13-3 margin in seven innings of action at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe Sunday evening.

Despite trailing by a 5-0 margin through three innings of work, Shawnee State attempted to work its way back into the thick of the battle on two separate occasions.

Following a one-out infield single by Diego Mendoza to the left side, Reid cranked back and lofted a two-run bomb over the left field wall on Oakland City starting pitcher Gehrig Tenhumberg to draw SSU within 5-2 through three-and-a-half innings complete.

Oakland City answered in the bottom half of the fourth frame with a run of its own, but in the top of the fifth, Shawnee State freshman shortstop Wyatt Haupt launched a deep fly ball that tailed off at the end of its travel life and dropped in the right field corner, allowing Haupt to sprint around to third base. Two pitches later, Haupt advanced on home via a passed ball -- cutting the Oakland City lead to a 6-3 margin.

Ultimately, Shawnee State's five errors proved to be a difference-maker as the Bears weren't able to get any closer in the contest.

The Bears are still alive in the double elimination tournament but must win a 10 a.m. contest against Midway, and then a 1:30 p.m. follow-up contest that would pit the Bears up against the Mighty Oaks again. If Shawnee State is able to win both games, that would then force the if-necessary, and deciding, River States Conference Championship Game against Oakland City which would bring the two teams together for a third meeting in the tournament.
