Cisco finishes 10th at NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships in 5,000 meter run

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Capping off another showing where Olivia Cisco performed above her preseeding expectations, the junior from Waverly sprinted to a 5,000 meter run national final finish that was two spots higher than her preliminary placement on the final day of the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships Saturday afternoon, which was held at the Alachua County Sports and Events Center in Gainesville, Fla.

Cisco, who clinched the Shawnee State indoor track and field program's second top-10 NAIA National finish in the six events that it competed in over the three-day period, ran a 17:39.01 to set a new personal standard by a tenth of a second in the event. As an entire group, Shawnee State collected four NAIA National Top-15 finishes in the six events that it competed in over the three-day NAIA National Championship Meet, and went 6-for-6 in NAIA National Top-20 showings.

"Olivia had a great day," Shawnee State Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Conner Flynn said. "It's easy to focus on NAIA All-American, but we focus on what we've preached all year -- progression. She just gets better and better each season. She wasn't ranked to make the final, then she did and outperformed her seed."

With two seniors who are graduating that finished ahead of Cisco in Saturday's event, Cisco has an opportunity to move up the ladder -- and contend further for NAIA All-American honors in the event.

Saturday's showing by Cisco adds to another terrific run for the junior -- who is 3-for-3 in national qualifications over the last three championships between cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track. Cisco finished 22nd nationally in the 10,000 meter run (38:50.86) at the 2024 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in May and added in a stout 52nd place finish in the 2024 NAIA Cross Country National Championships, posting a 22:11 in the 6K event.

"Olivia has been back running for five weeks off of injury and has done a handful of workouts," Flynn said. "To do what she did today is a great sign for what's to come in outdoor track. I'm proud and excited for her!"

She and Isaiah Lanoy -- who finished with a 9:27.75 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase at the 2024 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, a 24:57.6 in the 2024 NAIA Cross Country National Championships and a 8:32 in the indoor 3,000 meter run on Friday -- represent the individuals inside Connor Flynn's program's who have gone 3-for-3 over the last three NAIA National Championship appearances. Both are slated to return for the 2025-26 season -- and Isaiah Lanoy for the 2026-27 campaign -- in what is expected to be a stout running group from top to bottom.

Shawnee State's outdoor track and field programs will be in action in less than two weeks' time when the Bears head to the Cumberlands (Ky.) Early Spring Meet, which will be held in Williamsburg, Ky.
