MOUNT VERNON, Ga. -- The baseball program at Shawnee State notched 14 runs on 18 hits in a Saturday doubleheader against Brewton-Parker (Ga.), but weren't able to claim victories in the nonconference affairs at the Bears dropped 8-4 and 12-10 contests to the Barons in two competitive Saturday showdowns at BPC Baseball Field in Mount Vernon.
Game 1
Shawnee State mounted a charge in the opening game -- as after trailing by a 5-0 margin, the Bears got on the board in the fourth. A leadoff walk by Jace Parnin was followed by a double by Mason Reid, and an RBI sac fly by Wyatt Haupt, along with an RBI single by Eli Jones, trimmed the Brewton-Parker lead to a 5-2 margin after four innings of play.
Then, in the top of the fifth, Caeleb McGraw and Tyler Lund collected back-to-back singles, with an error allowing Shawnee State to put two runners in scoring position with an RBI groundout by Nolan Tressler bringing a run across to cut the deficit down to a 5-3 count. However, outside of a solo shot by Hunter Warner in the sixth inning, the Bears weren't able to get closer -- and ultimately dropped the first contest by four runs.
Jones (2-for-3, RBI), Warner (1-for-3, home run, RBI, run scored), McGraw (1-for-2, run scored), Reid (1-for-3, double, run scored) and Lund (1-for-3) all produced for the Bears from a hit standpoint. Haupt (sac fly RBI), Tressler (RBI groundout) and Parnin (walk, run scored) also added to Shawnee State's offensive damage in Game 1.
Game 2
Shawnee State immediately knocked out its frustrations in the second game, as back-to-back-to-back walks to begin Game 2 allowed Warner to drive in Tressler with an RBI single to put the Bears ahead by a 1-0 tally. A passed ball then scored a second run, and after a walk and a hit by pitch reloaded the bases, Ryan Scott came through with a two-RBI single to push Shawnee State's lead to a 4-0 margin after the opening half-inning of play.
Brewton-Parker answered with a 10-spot to take a 10-4 lead through four innings of play, but Shawnee State came right back with a resilient effort in the fifth -- as the Bears plated six runs in the top half of the frame to tie the score.
A leadoff single to left by Haupt was followed by a walk by Jones and a single by McGraw to load the bases, Tressler and Parnin came through with two-out magic as Tressler's two-out, two-RBI double and Parnin's two-RBI single one batter later chipped the lead down to 10-8 in a flash. The next batter, Mason Reid, then doubled home Parnin, and later scored himself on a balk -- effectively setting up a brand new contest at 10 runs apiece.
However, an RBI double and an RBI single by Brewton-Parker in the bottom half of the fifth pushed BPC's lead to 12-10 -- and Shawnee State wasn't able to answer with a salvo after that as the Barons held on.
Tressler (2-for-5, walk, two doubles, two RBI, two runs scored), Parnin (2-for-4, two walks, double, two RBI, run scored), Reid (3-for-5, walk, double, RBI, run scored), Warner (1-for-4, two walks, RBI, run scored) and Scott (1-for-4, two RBI) led the offense, while McGraw (1-for-4, run scored) and Lund (1-for-5) contributed to the hit column.
Haupt and Jones combined for six walks in Game 2, with Haupt going 1-for-4 at the plate to join in the hit list and Jones scoring twice to round out the Shawnee State offensive performance.
