(RV) SSU WBB picks up 72-61 nonconference win over Pikeville

Box Score PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- Shawnee State (9-3, 1-0) bested Pikeville 72-61 in Wednesday evening's nonconference matchup at Waller Gymnasium in Portsmouth. SSU has now won back-to-back contests against Pikeville.

Shawnee State trailed Pikeville 20-13 at the conclusion of the first quarter. Pikeville was 8-of-11 from the field (including 3-of-3 shooting from beyond-the-arc), and forced six SSU turnovers in the frame.

Shawnee State outscored Pikeville 21-11 in the second quarter. Junior TK Catchings paced SSU in second-frame scoring, notching 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting along with three rebounds. Junior Lily-May Walker -- who was playing for the first time this season -- scored six points in the quarter on 1-of-3 shooting along with going 4-of-6 from the free-throw line.

Shawnee State led Pikeville 34-31 at halftime.

SSU and Pikeville struggled to find much success offensively in the third quarter, as both teams finished below 36% from the field. Pikeville was able to gain a point on Shawnee State heading into the fourth quarter, as they won the third 13-12 over SSU.

Pikeville's Anika Stehbens led all scorers with five points in the quarter, while TK Catchings paced Shawnee State's offensive efforts with three points on 1-of-1 shooting from downtown.

After three quarters of play, Shawnee State led Pikeville 46-44.

SSU saw seven different players in the scoring column as they outscored Pikeville 26-17 in the fourth quarter. In what was the most efficient offensive period of the night for Shawnee State, the team shot 9-of-13 from the field, 2-of-2 from deep and 6-of-9 from the free-throw line -- cementing the night's final at 72-61 as SSU moved to 9-3 on the season.

Junior Kyla Torok led the Bears in scoring in the fourth with seven of her 11 total points on 3-of-4 shooting -- including a converted three-point-play from the free-throw line. Sohpomore Laken Williams and senior Miyoshi Ellis both converted three-point baskets in the quarter. Williams finished with five points in the fourth, knocking down a pair of free-throws in addition to her three-pointer, while Ellis split a two-shot trip to the line to finish the quarter with four.

On the night, TK Catchings led SSU in scoring with a season-high 15 points, along with six rebounds. Torok and Walker also finished in double-figures as they scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. Laken Williams finished her night with nine points, three assists and three rebounds.

All four of Shawnee State's top-four scorers on the evening came off the bench, as the Bears' reserves accounted for 48 of SSU's 72 points.
