Box Score PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- Shawnee State defeated Wright State Lake 82-74 on Wednesday. The midweek matchup between the Bears and Lakers was just the second all-time meeting between the two programs -- with Shawnee State having won both (2019). SSU has now won seven consecutive contests.
Wright State Lake came out of the gate swinging Wednesday night, as the Lakers jumped out to a 19-16 lead over Shawnee State in the first 10 minutes of the opening half.
Shawnee State would answer, however, as the Bears went on a 23-16 run over the half's final nine minutes and twenty-nine seconds -- taking a 39-36 lead over the Lakers into the break.
The Bears were led offensively by senior
El Sieger who finished the first half with team-high eight points on 2-of-2 shooting (1-of-1 from beyond-the-arc) and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line.
Daniel Rosenber scored seven of his eventual team-high 17 points in the first half, shooting 3-of-4 from the field (1-of-1 from deep).
Shawnee State saw seven other players (nine total) score in the first half, with
Jason Steele,
Jareon Mayo,
Rheyce DeBoard,
Ahmadou Aw,
Jaiden Guice,
Damon Charles and
Tyreon Payne all scoring between two and four points in the frame.
Shawnee State's lead over Wright State Lake was its highest with 1:53 remaining in the second half following an
El Sieger layup that put the Bears ahead of the Lakers by 15 points late in the contest.
Wright State Lake wasn't done just yet, however, as the Lakers finished the game on a 7-0 run that saw first-year Shawnee State head coach
Fred Lymas re-enter starting point guard
Rheyce DeBoard into the game with 17 seconds left.
DeBoard and the Bears would fend on the comeback effort of the Lakers -- cementing the night's final at 82-74 in favor of Shawnee State.
Daniel Rosenber paced the Bears in second-half scoring with 10 of his team-high 17 points on the night, and a rebound shy of a double-double with nine.
El Sieger, along with Rosenber, also finished with a team-high 17 points.
Jason Steele finished with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting (1-of-1 from three-point land) and 2-of-2 from the free-throw line.
10 total Bears graced the scoring column in the win over Wright State Lake, as the Bears shot 52.5% from the field (26.7% from three) and 14-of-20 (70%) from the free-throw line as a team.
