Lewis (50 free), France (100 back) set NAIA provisional cuts; SSU wins four events at Indiana Wesleyan

MARION, Ind. -- Trinidad and Tobago has been very kind to both Shawnee State swimming programs throughout their short swimming existences.

On Saturday, the country had two individuals hit NAIA provisional cut times on the same team -- as Shawnee State women's swimmers De-Nicha Lewis and Kaylee France each posted times below the necessary mark -- as Lewis' meet-winning 50 yard freestyle time of 25.45 and France's meet-winning 1:01 in the 100 yard backstroke allowed the pair to each lay claim to cut times in a dual meet at Indiana Wesleyan Saturday afternoon at De Voe Natatorium in Marion, Ind.

Lewis, who won the 50 yard freestyle by nearly three-tenths of a second, put together a time that was nearly a tenth-and-a-half better than the necessary cut mark and now serves as Shawnee State's best 50 yard freestyle mark of the season.

France, who already owned one NAIA provisional cut mark in the 50 yard freestyle following her performance in the season-opening Dr. Dillery Fall Frenzy earlier this season, added in her second NAIA National Cut with her 1:01 in the 100 yard backstroke. France's performance, which bettered the necessary cut time by nearly a half-second, was a meet-winner by nearly one-and-a-half seconds over Indiana Wesleyan's Reyna Hoffman, who qualified for and participated in four events at the 2025 NAIA Women's Swimming and Diving National Championships in March.

Along with the above duo's winning marks and cut times, the pair also led Shawnee State to a meet-winning 1:53.15 in the 200 yard medley relay, with SSU bettering all three Indiana Wesleyan relay groups thanks to the efforts of Lewis, France, Abigail Bosler and Mercedes Mwebeiha.

Shawnee State sophomore Emilie Wasnich added in the Bears' fourth and final triumph of the day as the sophomore swam a 11:56.42 in the 1000 yard freestyle, winning the event by nearly 17 seconds.

Bosler and Lewis added in second and third place finishes in the 100 yard freestyle while the quartet of Bosler, France, Lewis and Mwebeiha again posted a strong effort in the second and final relay of the meet, nabbing a 1:43.26 together to finish second, just under a quarter second back of Indiana Wesleyan's A group's meet-winning 1:43.03.

The women's swimming program at Shawnee State will be back in action alongside the men's swimming program when the Bears take on Indiana Wesleyan again in three weeks' time Saturday, Nov. 22, when the Wildcats make the return trip to Shawnee State and the Warsaw Aquatic Center.
