EATON, Ohio -- The women's soccer program at Shawnee State got seven saves from sophomore goalkeeper
Harlee Brand and battled River States Conference foe Indiana-East to a scoreless tie at the halftime break, but an early second half goal from Indiana-East's Amiyah Thacker in the 47th minute forced the Bears to settle for a 1-0 defeat to the Red Wolves Saturday afternoon in an RSC match that was held in Eaton, Ohio.
Despite facing a slight 13-6 deficit in shots, the play represented the score throughout the competitive 90-minute match.
Shawnee State nearly scored twice early in the contest, asÂ
Lexi Conkel's second minute shot piercing took an acrobatic save from Indiana-East goalkeeper Elizabeth Sarfo-Benson to ultimately stop the trajectory of the ball from hitting its intended destination.
Annie Coriell then attempted to head a ball above Sarfo-Benson's reach in the 20th minute, but couldn't quite get enough velocity on the ball as Sarfo-Benson was able to make the stop.
Indiana-East attempted six shots in the opening half offensively, but the play of Brand in goal, along with backline starters
Jelena Krpan,
Elizabeth Brown,
Isabelle Riddle and
Ariane Davis as well as reserve
Rachel Remy helped stymie the Red Wolves in the opening half as Indiana-East had two shots saved by Brand in the opening half while the defense blocked two additional shots.
In the second half of competition, Brand recovered after allowing the 47th minute goal by stopping shots in the 54th, 73rd, 74th, 76th and 86th minutes of action.
Shawnee State, themselves, posted three quality shots toward the Indiana-East goal in the second half -- but a 72nd minute attempt by Conkel was saved while shots by
Robyn Drinkwater (83rd) and Riddle (88th) missed high.
The Bears (2-8-1, 1-2 River States Conference) return to action Saturday, Oct. 11 when Shawnee State takes on Kentucky Christian (0-9, 0-5 River States Conference) at 5 p.m. at Shawnee Turf to lead off what will be a River States Conference doubleheader -- with the men's soccer match immediately following at 7:30 p.m. at Shawnee Turf.
