Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

SSU VB drops Kentucky Christian in straight-set smashing (25-18, 25-17, 25-15)

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- The volleyball program at Shawnee State put together a complete performance Saturday afternoon in a River States Conference home match against the Kentucky Christian Knights' volleyball program, as the Bears dominated on all fronts -- hitting .268 to Kentucky Christian's .098 as a team and controlling the tempo of play throughout as a result in a straight-set victory (25-18, 25-17, 25-15) at Waller Gymnasium.

Shawnee State, who improved to 17-10 overall and 7-5 in River States Conference action, trailed Kentucky Christian (9-16, 2-10 RSC) just six times the entire match and only once in the first and third sets combined. Camille McIntosh, who finished with six total blocks by herself in the contest, finished with as many blocks individually as the Knights did from an entire team standpoint, while Megan Steele posted 21 digs to lead the efforts on the backline.

Katelynn Boerger's 11 kills on a .304 attack percentage, along with Cally Carpenter's 22 assists and seven digs, headed up the offense, which hit .256 in the first set and .368 in the third frame en route to the convincing sweep.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

Kentucky Christian scored the opening point of the match, but from there, the first set proved to be all Shawnee State as the Bears went on a 14-5 run with McIntosh posting two kills and a block to start the spurt and Faulkner adding in a pair of kills to keep the run moving. SSU never led by less than four points the rest of the way in the 25-18 opening set triumph.

In the second set, Kentucky Christian took a 5-3 lead and led by a slight 9-8 margin after 17 volleys, but Shawnee State responded with a 15-4 push, its largest of the match, to take control. McIntosh posted two blocks and a kill during this stretch while Makaela Lovely added in a pair of service aces to give SSU a commanding 23-13 lead -- more than enough to ultimately win the set and claim a 2-0 match lead.

In the final set of play, Boerger and Faulkner each posted two kills apiece while McIntosh posted two total blocks, helping Shawnee State take a 7-3 advantage to begin the set. Kentucky Christian closed Shawnee State's lead down to a 10-9 margin in the third frame, but the Bears responded with a massive 13-3 push that saw Boerger post three kills with Faulkner and McIntosh adding in a pair of spikes apiece -- with the latter posting a solo block to boot -- as the Bears cruised to the win from there.

ADDITIONAL

Faulkner added in eight kills on a .261 attack percentage while McIntosh dropped in seven spikes on a .333 attack mark and Bree Hicks six while hitting .278 to aid what was a well-balanced Shawnee State offensive attack.

Shawnee State returns to action next Friday with a match at West Virginia Tech. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Beckley, W. Va.
