Nine teams to participate in action over weekend on behalf of SSU Athletics

The athletic department at Shawnee State University will have nine different programs in action over the course of the weekend -- as the Shawnee State men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's bowling and volleyball programs will all compete this weekend with volleyball (vs. Kentucky Christian) and men's and women's swimming (vs. Midway, Pikeville, West Virginia Tech) leading off the festivities for the weekend itself.

The swimming programs at Shawnee State headline the day with a quad meet against Midway, West Virginia Tech and Pikeville, which commences Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. inside the Warsaw Aquatic Center.

According to SwimCloud, a total of 21 swimmers will be in action Saturday morning for the event -- including eight women and 13 men.

Shawnee State volleyball (16-10, 6-5 River States Conference) vs. Kentucky Christian (9-15, 2-9 River States Conference), Saturday, 1 p.m., Waller Gymnasium, Portsmouth, Ohio
 
Following the swimming programs' efforts, the Shawnee State volleyball program plays host to Kentucky Christian in a River States Conference match that begins at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Waller Gymnasium in Portsmouth.

The volleyball program defeated Kentucky Christian in its River States Conference opener Saturday, Sept. 13 in Grayson, Ky. -- taking down the Knights in a five-set match that was played at Ron Arnett Court. Bree Hicks and Camille McIntosh combined for 29 kills in the match while Makaela Lovely tallied 41 assists and Megan Steele 26 digs in Shawnee State's victory.

In its final meet of the regular season, the Shawnee State men's and women's cross country programs will take part in the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge, an annual and prestigious event that always carries with it a ton of excellent competition.

In all, the Shawnee State women will be one of 15 teams who are either ranked or receiving votes competing in the event, while the Shawnee State men will be one of 16 teams who are either ranked or receiving votes doing the same.

Male runners include Connor Darnell, Isaiah Lanoy, Kaiden Lanoy, Trevor Lanoy, Eli Lengl, Jerry O'Dell and Dakotah Sanders while female runners include Juniper Allen, Hadlee Cisco, Olivia Cisco, Jessica Elick, Payton McQuirt, Sydney Reed and Kirsten Evans.

The men's lineup includes ranked teams such as No. 2 Indiana Wesleyan, No. 5 Taylor, No. 8 Marian, No. 10 Indiana-East, No. 14 Rocky Mountain, No. 16 Aquinas, No. 17 Carroll, No. 18 Cornerstone, No. 19 Goshen, No. 22 Spring Arbor and No. 24 St. Francis (Ill.) and four teams receiving votes including Shawnee State, while the women's lineup features No. 1 Taylor, No. 4 Indiana Wesleyan, No. 8 Cornerstone, No. 10 Grace, No. 11 Marian, No. 12 Aquinas, No. 16 Olivet Nazarene, No. 17 Montana Tech, No. 20 Carroll, No. 22 Lewis-Clark State and six teams receiving votes including Shawnee State.

Well inside the final weekends of their regular seasons, the Shawnee State men's and women's soccer programs will look to finish their campaigns out strong beginning with a River States Conference road doubleheader at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods Saturday afternoon.

The men's soccer program (7-4-3, 3-3-1 RSC), which plays first, can potentially seal up not only a River States Conference Tournament spot but seal a home contest with a win Saturday afternoon in its match against Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (5-9, 3-2 RSC). As for the women's soccer program, the group will look to build for 2026 as Shawnee State will attempt to start its three-game road stretch and final three contests of the 2025 season with a win Saturday in a match that begins at 3:30 p.m.

Last but not least, the Shawnee State men's and women's bowling programs will be in action throughout the weekend at the PBA Greater Nashville Open and Brandon Burns Classic, which takes place Saturday and Sunday in Smyrna, Tenn.

Shawnee State's women finished seventh last weekend while the Shawnee State men finished eighth at the Ohio Bowling Conference's first event of the 2025-26 season. The Shawnee State junior varsity women's squad has won both of its events that it has competed in so far in 2025 from a team perspective.
