In its final regular season home contests of the 2025 season, the men's and women's soccer programs at Shawnee State will, perhaps fittingly, take on its rival, Rio Grande, in a pair of River States Conference matchups that will be held at Shawnee Turf Thursday evening at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The latter contest will serve as Senior Night for the Shawnee State men's soccer program, as
Nikos Pontikis,
Alfie Maynard,
Marco Riva,
Clement Akanyah, Belo Bitencourt, Trevor Aviero Masanjala and
Ephraim Mutombo will all be honored in the nightcapper.
Alongside the contests, Shawnee State will be hosting Business After Hours in conjunction with the Portsmouth Area Chamber of Commerce, which will consist of free food, drinks and giveaways, a pop-up shop that features gear with the newly rebranded logos, and an athletics expansion and invitation to join the NCAA Division II realm.
Shawnee State Women's Soccer vs. Rio Grande, 5 p.m., Shawnee Turf, Portsmouth, Ohio
- The women's soccer program has had eight different players score a goal in 2025.
- Shawnee State redshirt junior Robyn Drinkwater leads the Bears with two goals, six assists and 10 points in 2025. Drinkwater and Annie Coriell (four goals, one assist, nine points), Elizabeth Brown, Madison Culp, Harlee Brand and Jelena Krpan have played in and started in each of the Bears' 14 contests in 2025 to date.
- Through 14 matches, Shawnee State sophomore goalkeeper Harlee Brand has made 89 saves in 2025 and holds a goals against average of 1.85, an improvement from her 2.06 GAA as a freshman over the same stretch of matches.
- Shawnee State (3-10-1, 2-4 River States Conference) sits seventh in the River States Conference Standings, but has an excellent opportunity in front of it. The Bears can still make the 2025 River States Conference Postseason Tournament if Shawnee State wins its final four contests in 2025.
Shawnee State Men's Soccer vs. Rio Grande, 7:30 p.m., Shawnee Turf, Portsmouth, Ohio
- The men's soccer program has had 12 different players score a goal and 11 players collect assists in 2025.
- Six players have notched seven or more points in 2025, including Riva, Pontikis, Sei Aitoku, Bitencourt, Maynard and Sekou Mara.
- The defensive backline and starting goalkeeper Toby Forsythe have a historically strong defense in 2025, as Forsythe and the defense have allowed SSU to post a goals against average of 1.01, which would break the single-season school record if it holds up.
- Shawnee State (7-3-3, 3-2-1 River States Conference) holds fourth place in the River States Conference Standings. The Bears would all but clinch a spot in the conference tournament and could potentially clinch at least one home conference match with a win Thursday evening.
