PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- The men's and women's soccer programs at Shawnee State dropped 3-0 decisions to West Virginia Tech in two River States Conference contests that were held Thursday evening at Shawnee Turf in Portsmouth.
Both contests were highly competitive throughout much of the evening despite the final scores.
Highlights of both games are below:
WOMEN:
- The women's soccer program faced a scant 14-9 disadvantage in shots Thursday evening.
- Lucia Arbide led Shawnee State with four shots -- narrowly missing on attempts in the 12th and 45th minutes of action.
- Anna Sas and Annie Coriell posted three additional blasts that were close calls for West Virginia Tech as Sas and Coriell nearly scored in quick transitions following goal kicks by WV Tech.
- Isabelle Riddle just missed an 85th minute shot that sailed high of the net.
- Continuing to play in a solid manner in goal, Shawnee State sophomore goalkeeper Harlee Brand made seven saves to keep the Bears in the contest.
MEN:
- Facing their own narrow shot disadvantage, Shawnee State's men faced an equally scant 13-8 disadvantage in shots.
- SSU came close to scoring three times in the opening 27 minutes of play as Nikos Pontikis missed just wide with a shot while Theo Trindade and Alfie Maynard had a shot and a header, respectively, saved in the 17th and 27th minutes.
- Marco Riva and Sei Aitoku had shots in back-to-back minutes (47th and 48th) that kept West Virginia Tech honest as well.
- Trindade ultimately led Shawnee State with three shots in the match.
ADDITIONAL:
Both programs will be back in action Saturday afternoon when Shawnee State takes on Indiana-East in a pair of River States Conference matchups that will be played in Eaton, Ohio. Game times are set for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
