SSU VB drops four-setter to Indiana-Southeast

NEW ALBANY, Ind. -- The volleyball program at Shawnee State got 10 kills on a .381 attack percentage from Camille McIntosh and got nine solo blocks between McIntosh, Camille Hall, Whytney Faulkner and Katelynn Boerger, but the Bears dropped a 3-1 decision to Indiana-Southeast (15-25, 25-15, 24-26, 19-25) Saturday afternoon in a River States Conference match that was held at the IU-Southeast Activities Building in New Albany.

Shawnee State, who now sits at 16-10 overall and 6-5 in the River States Conference, still holds control of second place in the River States Conference East Division as the Bears currently hold the tiebreaker over Indiana-East due to its 3-2 victory over the Red Wolves back on Sept. 26.

After dropping the opening set, Devan Spriggs' group flipped the script in the second frame as Shawnee State, down 2-0 to begin the second set, ripped off seven consecutive points as McIntosh posted three kills and a block while Faulkner and Boerger each added in a block to give the Bears a 7-2 advantage.

SSU then kicked its performance into high gear over much of the remaining volleys in the set, as three kills from Faulkner and Bree Hicks and a pair of service aces from Brooke Bossert allowed the Bears to take an insurmountable 21-6 advantage en route to a 25-15 second set victory, tying the match at a set aside.

The third set of action proved to be a dandy on both sides, as Shawnee State began the set by scoring five consecutive points as a pair of kills and a block from McIntosh, along with a kill from Boerger, gave SSU a five-point edge that it would, for much of the set, consistently hold.

Ahead 17-12 in the third frame, Indiana-Southeast went on a 4-1 swing to cut the SSU lead to 18-16, but the Bears responded by securing five of the next eight points, taking a 23-19 lead as a kill and a block by Whytney Faulkner and a service ace from Cally Carpenter allowed the Bears to hold a four-point cushion in the closing stages of the match.

However, the Indiana-Southeast tag team of Haley Jaster and Ella Brooks proved to be up for the task -- as the duo, who combined for each of Indiana-Southeast's seven points to close out the third set, allowed the Grenadiers to rally from behind as the duo combined for 34 kills and six blocks in the match as Indiana-Southeast claimed the third set, 26-24 as well as the fourth set in the match.

Along with McIntosh's performance on the frontline, Cally Carpenter led Shawnee State with 24 assists while Megan Steele's 19 digs led the Bears from a defensive standpoint.

Shawnee State will return to action Saturday, Oct. 25 when the Bears play host to Kentucky Christian in a match that will be held at Waller Gymnasium. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
