PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- The men's soccer program at Shawnee State matched the Oakland City Mighty Oaks' men's soccer program with eight shots apiece -- including three shots each in the first half and five shots aside in the second -- but a penalty kick goal by Oakland City's Ross O'Brien in the 35th minute after a foul in the box by Shawnee State proved to be the difference-maker as the Bears lost to the Mighty Oaks, 1-0, in a River States Conference match that was held Thursday evening at Shawnee Turf.
Shawnee State posted chances with shots in the 23rd, 30th and 45th minutes by Belo Bitencourt, Theo Trindade and
Alfie Maynard -- which all just missed either wide or high of the net. The Bears also had two excellent chances for the equalizing goal in the 59th and 60th minutes of action, but
Sekou Mara's attempt hit the crossbar while
Marco Riva's shot glanced off of the post.
Sebastian Oboukhov was able to get a shot on frame in the 76th minute on the left side of the box, but the junior's shot was saved by Oakland City goalkeeper Jacob Robinson.
Shawnee State (7-3-2, 3-2 River States Conference) returns to action Saturday afternoon with a match against Brescia (3-8-3, 2-3-1 River States Conference), which is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
