Smash Bros. Eliminated by Spartans

Last Thursday, SSU Super Smash Bros. was swept out of the NACE spring playoffs in a tough match against first seed Michigan State. This ends their spring season with an astonishing 8 – 1 overall record.

The first game was led by Desmond Craft (gamertag: EchoForce). The graduating player brought his Joker gameplay to earn two stocks to start. Following was fellow graduating player Noah Dean (gamertag: King), who entered as Wii Fit trainer. He snagged one more stock before being eliminated. Entering third was freshman Michael Clark (gamertag: Smooglegad) on his signature King K Rool. He took two more stocks before he fell, leaving seven remaining to SSU's three. Anchoring for the squad was Chistopher Mowery (gamertag: Spaceminer) on Toon Link. Despite the valiant effort, the sophomore only claimed five of the Spartans' seven. Game one was an 0 – 2 loss for the Bears.

Game two saw Craft return as the opener for SSU, bringing more Joker play to the field. He claimed one stock before being eliminated. Entering to try and reclaim the two-stock deficit was graduating player Ethan Knouff (gamertag: Strakh) on Mr. Game & Watch. The Spartans were a strong opponent for him and took him out before he could claim a stock. Clark returned as King K Rool, snagging another stock to total three for the night and was eliminated. Mowery anchored once more, but only claimed two stocks before being taken down, totaling an 0 – 8 loss for the Bears.

This loss knocks Smash Bros. out of the NACE national tournament, ending the season. Their calendar continues as they prepare for Ohio Ultimate Summit. Mowery has qualified for the tournament, with Last Chance Qualifier on April 13 providing opportunity for more SSU representation. Stay tuned for the upcoming action.
