As a veteran mainstay on the Shawnee State softball roster, Shawnee State senior ace pitcher Cassie Berry has been a key piece toward providing an infusion of life into the program itself -- whether it be through her pitching prowess on the softball diamond or through her work in the classroom off of it.
On Tuesday evening, the senior pitcher and Scioto County native got to reap the fruits of her labor from a softball standpoint -- as the West Portsmouth native and Notre Dame High School graduate struck out eight batters en route to collecting the second no-hitter of the year for the SSU softball program in a 10-0 mercy rule victory in Game 1 over the Miami-Hamilton Harriers' softball program.
Berry's strong pitching effort in Game 1 was followed by a 13-hit outing and yet another 10-0 mercy rule triumph in Game 2 -- as the Shawnee State offense pounded out 20 hits and got home runs from Allison Tom in Game 1 and Cameryn Davidson in Game 2 in the 10-run triumphs over Miami-Hamilton at Waterworks Field in Fairfield, Ohio Tuesday evening.
Between the two contests, Shawnee State posted seven multi-run innings in the 11 innings that the Bears took part in against Miami-Hamilton in Tuesday's nonconference doubleheader. The Bears (24-6) had 12 different players reach the hit column between the two contests.
Game 1 -- Shawnee State 10, Miami-Hamilton 0 (F/5)
After scoring a run on an sacrifice fly RBI from Lauren Spears that scored Jenna Christopher, who walked and stole a base to end up in scoring position, to take a 1-0 advantage following the opening inning of work, Shawnee State opened up a sizeable lead in Game 1 by scoring four runs in the second inning of play.
A walk by Mackenzie Hale, a fielder's choice, and a passed ball was followed by a bunt single by Lexie Lockwood, who put runners at the corners ahead of Allison Tom's initial at-bat. Tom then drove in Gracey McCullough with her sacrifice fly RBI.
Later in the inning, Lockwood and Brittani Wolfenbarker came around to score on a passed ball when Christopher came back up to the plate. Christopher, who walked on that passed ball, advanced to second base on an error, stole third base and came around to score on an RBI single by Cassie Berry -- pushing the SSU lead to a 5-0 count.
McCullough's single to right field, followed by Lockwood reaching on another bunt, then helped set the stage for Tom -- who blasted a three-run homer to left field that pushed the Bears' lead to an 8-0 margin. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Spears and Sierra Dunnagan finalized the scoring in the fourth frame of work.
Berry, who rolled from start to finish in her no-hitter, retired each of the first 13 batters that she faced with six strikeouts to carry a perfect game through four-and-a-third innings of work, then worked around a hit batter and a walk by recording two additional strikeouts to finish off her first career no-hitter at the collegiate level.
Game 2 -- Shawnee State 10, Miami-Hamilton 0 (F/6)
Like Berry in Game 1, starting pitcher Cameryn Davidson proved to be the focal point in Game 2.
The Raceland (Ky.) High School graduate, who struck out three batters and allowed just two hits in four innings of work as the Game 2 starter inside the circle, got Shawnee State's offense going in the second inning with her leadoff single. Davidson then advanced to second on a wild pitch and, after another single by Lexie Lockwood, Davidson came around to score on a sacrifice fly RBI by Allison Tom. Lockwood then scored on Jenna Christopher's own sacrifice fly RBI, as the Bears successfully manufactured two runs to take an early 2-0 lead after the second inning of work.
Then, in the latter stages of Game 2, the Bears opened up the lead.
Following a one-out error, back-to-back singles by Tom and Brittani Wolfenbarker resulted in Wolfenbarker scoring Haley Hawes. A fielder's choice and a Lauren Spears walk then loaded the bases for Sierra Dunnagan -- who drove in two more runs with her own two-RBI base knock to right field, giving SSU a 5-0 advantage after four innings complete. In the fifth frame, Davidson added to the lead with one big swing as the junior clobbered a homer to center field, while Lockwood, who singled, stole second base and scored on Bianca Belo-Diaz's RBI double to left field.
Shawnee State then closed out the scoring in the sixth inning of action -- as a leadoff walk by Christopher and a sacrifice bunt by Spears put the Bears in business. While a double by Genavie Espinoza ultimately wasn't able to plate a run on a strong defensive play in the outfield by Miami-Hamilton, Amariah Hoerner's two-RBI single to center field was as Dunnagan and Espinoza came across to score. Hoerner then moved to second base on defensive indifference, stole third base, and following a walk by Lockwood, Belo-Diaz drove in Hoerner to complete the scoring.
Additional
Sierra Dunnagan (3-for-6, walk, double, three RBI, run scored), Lexie Lockwood (3-for-6, walk, four runs scored) and Allison Tom (3-for-7, home run, five RBI, run scored) led the Bears who played in both contests, while Cameryn Davidson (2-for-3, home run, RBI, two runs scored) and Bianca Belo-Diaz (2-for-2, double, two RBI) were standouts in Game 2 for the Bears.
Shawnee State (24-6, 14-6 River States Conference) will turn its attention to a Friday afternoon doubleheader at Point Park (12-16, 6-12 River States Conference) at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. in Pittsburgh, Pa. before playing Ohio Christian (9-19, 7-11 River States Conference) Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in Circleville, Ohio.
