Behind three runs each in the third and fourth frames of action, a two-run ninth inning and an eight-inning five-hitter from Jakobe Reese, the Shawnee State baseball program was able to finish off a key River States Conference series sweep Sunday afternoon by collecting a 10-3 victory over Alice Lloyd (Ky.) in a conference matchup that was held in Pippa Passes, Ky.
Shawnee State, who scored in four separate innings of work en route to collecting the triumph, notched its 10 runs on nine hits. Six of those nine hits were of the extra base variety.
Reese, the starter for the third and final contest of the series, didn't allow a single hit by Alice Lloyd over the first four innings of action en route to guiding the Bears to victory.
Offensively, Shawnee State broke through in the third inning as Tyler Lund's one-out triple to right field allowed Ryan Scott to drive in Lund with an RBI single to right. A walk by Hunter Warner then put Noah Sniadach up at the dish -- who proceeded to shoot a two-RBI triple to left to score both Lund and Warner and give the Bears a 3-0 advantage after three innings of work.
In the fourth frame, two hit batters allowed SSU to take advantage again -- as Lund got the roll going in the fourth frame with a two-run single to center field to score both Zach Gaspar and Michael De Jesus. Lund then scored on an error, pushing the SSU lead to a 6-0 count through four innings of work.
While an early no-hit bid by Reese was broken up in the fifth frame, the Mansfield, Ohio native continued to throw darts as the upperclassman struck out six batters in addition to his five-hitter. The 6-5 hurler gave up two Alice Lloyd runs in the sixth frame of work, but an error by the Eagles' defense earlier in the top half of the sixth inning and a sacrifice fly by Hunter Warner in the seventh stanza kept Shawnee State's lead at a solid six-run cushion.
The Bears then finished off the contest in style -- as as a leadoff double by Kyle Eslick, Nolan Tressler stepped up three batters later -- and clobbered a two-run homer to dead center to cap the SSU scoring in grand style.
Additional
Tyler Lund (2-for-3, triple, two RBI, two runs scored), Ryan Scott (2-for-3, double, RBI, two runs scored), Zach Gaspar (2-for-3, double, two runs scored), Nolan Tressler (1-for-5, home run, two RBI, run scored), Noah Sniadach (1-for-4, triple, two RBI) and Kyle Eslick (1-for-3, double, run scored) led the Bears' offensive production Sunday afternoon.
Shawnee State (17-19, 11-7 River States Conference) briefly exits RSC action to take on Wilberforce in a scheduled nonconference doubleheader that is set for Tuesday, April 9 at 1 p.m. on the grounds of Branch Rickey Park.
