Shawnee State multi-sport athletes Brianna Brudy and Haidyn Wamsley are considered to be two of Shawnee State's brightest multi-sport standouts for a reason.
The pair showed off their special abilities once again in Friday evening's Charleston Golden Eagle Invitational in Charleston, W. Va. -- as Brudy, competing in the women's long jump for the first time as a collegiate athlete, posted a 17-foot, half-inch jump to take home top honors in the long jump while Wamsley posted a 16-foot, seven-inch jump to finish second in the same event as the pair combined to score 18 of Shawnee State's 36 tallies in that event alone, heading up the 10 women who competed in Friday's festivities for the SSU women's track and field program.
Brudy, who had already posted program records in the 100 (12.71) and 200 (26.02) meter dashes prior to Friday's outing, posted her 17-feet and one-half inch, or 5.19 meters, to win the 11-participant long jump. Wamsley, who currently holds the program record in the long jump with a 5.34 meter, or 17-foot-and-six-and-quarter-inch mark, placed second with a 5.05-meter long jump Friday.
In addition to their performances in the long jump, Brudy finished 14th out of 24 competitors in the 100 meter dash with a 12.99, while Brudy and Wamsley, along with Ivy Gentry and Makaela Lovely, ran a 54.30 in the women's 4-by-100 meter relay to score five additional points with a fourth-place finish in that event.
In the triple jump, Makenna Lovely's 29-foot, eight-inch performance, followed by Marli Marcum's 28-foot, one-inch showing and Makaela Lovely's 27-foot, nine-and-a-half inch jump put the trio in fourth, fifth and sixth respectively in that event, notching an additional 12 points for Shawnee State. Beth Middleton, who ran a strong 19:51.67 in the women's 5,000 meter run, scored the remaining point for the Bears by finishing eighth in that event.
