The women's tennis program at Shawnee State picked up its first River States Conference victory in fine fashion over the weekend, defeating Indiana-Southeast by a 4-1 tally in a match that was played to clinch in Floyds Knobs, Ind. due to inclement weather.
Lacey Urban and Lexy Urban proved to be critical for the Bears at every stop at both singles and doubles. The duo, playing at No. 2 doubles, defeated Elana Hamby and Maci Vaughn by a 6-3 margin to give Shawnee State the doubles point after IU-Southeast defaulted at the No. 3 doubles slot.
Then in singles, SSU -- who needed just two points to win the match after IU-Southeast also defaulted on No. 6 singles -- finished matters out. Lacey Urban, at No. 2 singles, defeated Katie Weimer 6-3, 6-0 while Antonia Ilea, competing at No. 4 singles, defeated Maci Vaughn 6-2, 6-4 to finish the match off.
Lacey Urban's performance at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles resulted in the women's tennis program's second conference player of the week honor in school history and the first since Feb. 8, 2021. That release is at https://www.ssubears.com/sports/wten/2023-24/releases/20240415wwvczc.
The SSU women's tennis program will face Midway (Ky.) at 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon in what will be the Bears' next-to-last home match of the 2024 season as well as the final regular season River States Conference matchup of the year for the program. The RSC contest is a makeup from Tuesday, April 2, which was a rainout.
