Game Recap: Softball |

SSU drops RSC doubleheader to Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (2-1, 8-6)

The softball program at Shawnee State again attempted to rally from late inning deficits in both Games 1 and 2 of a River States Conference doubleheader against the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods Pomeroys' softball program, but failed to nab victory as the Bears dropped 2-1 and 8-6 decisions Friday evening in Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Ind.

Shawnee State notched 15 hits between both contests, but left six runners on base in Game 1 and seven on in Game 2 in the scant setback.

Game 1

In the first contest, Shawnee State, outside of RBI singles by Saint Mary-of-the-Woods' Nevaeh Pender and Justyce Rohrabaugh in the second inning, played well defensively on all fronts as the Pomeroys notched just two of their seven base hits outside of the two-run second inning.

Cassie Berry, who pitched the first four innings, pitched admirably yet again before yielding way to Amariah Hoerner -- who threw the final two innings in relief without allowing a run.

With one out in the seventh frame, Hoerner launched a solo home run that cut the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods lead in half, 2-1, with two more outs still to play with. With two gone in the seventh, Brittani Wolfenbarker's double put the tying run in scoring position and brought the winning run to the plate, but a fly out to left field forced SSU to settle for the scant setback.

Hoerner, who went 1-for-3 with her solo blast, was joined by Wolfenbarker (2-for-3, double), Lauren Spears (2-for-3), Bianca Belo-Diaz (1-for-3) and Jenna Christopher (1-for-4) in the hit column.

Game 2

In Game 2, Shawnee State wasted no time getting on the scoreboard first as a walk by Jenna Christopher and a sacrifice bunt by Lauren Spears led to Sierra Dunnagan's RBI single that brought Christopher in, giving SSU a 1-0 lead after an inning of work.

Amariah Hoerner added in an RBI single of her own to help break a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the third frame, but after a home run by Lyric Krause, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods retook the lead -- and kept the point from there on.

Allison Tom posted a strong effort in Game 2 by going 2-for-3 with a two-RBI double in the fifth to help Shawnee State claw within 8-6 late, while Dunnagan continued building on her strong freshman season by going 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored.

Jenna Christopher (1-for-3, walk, run scored), Mackenzie Hale (1-for-3), Bianca Belo-Diaz (1-for-3, two runs scored) and Hoerner (1-for-4, RBI) rounded out those who had base hits in Game 2.
