The men's tennis program at Shawnee State collected a big win to end its Spring Break affairs Wednesday, with the SSU men collecting a rather convincing 7-2 triumph over Webster (Mo.) in the last of its four matches during competitions held around the St. Louis, Mo. area.
Highlights -- Webster
In doubles play, Shawnee State blasted through Webster with relative ease at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles slots, with Abubakar Yakabu Lea and Zayden Rinehart teaming up for an 8-3 victory over Webster's No. 1 doubles duo of Matt Birchmeier and Carson Fisher. Ishamael Dowuona and Ivan Wularu added in an 8-6 victory of their own at No. 2 doubles, taking down Webster's Jack Forlenza and Tyler Gonzalez in the process. The No. 3 doubles unit of Keenen Lambert and Zinedine Arva Purbo fell by an 8-4 margin to Webster's Jack Forlenza and Andrew McDonald, but the Bears still held a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
In singles, Shawnee State made quick work of Webster, with the Bears dominating the proceedings at nearly every stop:
- At No. 1 singles, Yakabu Lea posted a 6-1, 6-1 blowout of Birchmeier.
- Wularu, at No. 3 singles, defeated Fisher, 6-1, 6-4.
- Rinehart, at the No. 4 slot, had no trouble with Webster's Robert McDaniel, winning 6-3, 6-2.
- Lambert, at No. 5 singles, grinded out a 6-0, 7-5 triumph over Forlenza.
- Arva Purbo closed out the team victory with a 6-4, 6-1 nod over Gonzales.
