Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

SSU exacts revenge on Alice Lloyd (Ky.) with 59-53 victory in Pippa Passes

The women's basketball program at Shawnee State got two big efforts from Chianne Gloster and Cianna Gloster to score a 59-53 victory over the Alice Lloyd Eagles' women's basketball program -- as Chianne Gloster notched 17 points and seven rebounds while Cianna Gloster added in 16 rebounds and 11 points to help SSU overcome a first quarter deficit and score its 15th win of the 2023-24 season with its six-point road victory over ALC in Pippa Passes, Ky.

Finding itself trailing by an 11-6 deficit after the opening quarter of action, Shawnee State, who shot 1-of-11 from the field in the opening quarter, turned the tables on Alice Lloyd as the Bears held the Eagles to just 14 made field goals over the final three quarters of play, nabbed a plus-six rebounding advantage (43-37), and posted sizeable advantages in bench points (30-21) and points in the paint (30-18) in Tuesday evening's triumph.

Gloster sisters get it done

With just one point between them after the opening quarter of play, Chianne and Cianna Gloster began to warm up in the second quarter -- one where the pair combined for six points and four rebounds to help Shawnee State close within a 22-20 margin at the halftime break.

However, in the second half of competition, the pair really turned up the dial.

Shawnee State took the lead for good midway through the third quarter as Amiya Latham hit a big three-pointer with 6:39 to play in the third quarter, Sanaya Gregory hit a jumper with 5:47 to play in the third frame and Latham added in a free throw with 5:11 to play to give the Bears a 28-27 lead, but the Gloster sisters were pivotal in giving SSU the lead to stay.

The duo combined to score seven of Shawnee State's final 10 tallies in the third quarter of action and kept the run going in the fourth and final frame by adding in 14 of the Bears' 21 notches in the final frame. Chianne Gloster was especially pivotal from a scoring standpoint in the final frame, scoring 10 of her 17 tallies in the last quarter -- including a driving, high-arcing layup that dropped with 1:57 to play in the contest and put the Bears ahead by a 54-47 count.

Prior to that, Alice Lloyd had cut the lead to one -- 43-42 -- on back-to-back three-pointers by Abby Maggard, but after Chianne Gloster made the first and missed the second, Cianna Gloster backed her sister up with a rebound and the putback. Cianna Gloster ultimately notched nine rebounds and eight points in the second half alone to aid the winning cause.

Ultimately, the duo combined for 28 points and 23 rebounds -- as Cianna Gloster raised her season averages to 12.3 rebounds, 12.1 points per game, 2.5 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game while Chianne Gloster now sits with averages of 8.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per contest.

Cianna Gloster posted her 16th double-figure scoring mark and her 14th double-double in 24 games while also notching her third straight contest of 15 rebounds or more. Chianne Gloster posted her eighth double-figure scoring output and her 10th contest with at least seven or more rebounds to date this season.

Additional

Jariah Steele posted another strong outing off of the bench, notching six of her eight points in the opening half of competition and posting three rebounds and two steals to boot, while Markayla Holland added in six points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals and Gregory six points, three rebounds and two assists in the victory.

Shawnee State (15-9, 7-6 RSC) will turn its attention to a Saturday afternoon matchup against Point Park (Pa.) in another critical River States Conference contest. Game time is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10.
