Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

SSU WBB cruises to 67-43 road victory over WV Tech

The women's basketball program at Shawnee State faced no issues in a River States Conference against West Virginia Tech, scoring its largest margin of victory this season against a River States Conference opponent with a 67-43 victory over West Virginia Tech Tuesday evening in Beckley, W. Va.

Shawnee State, who featured a balanced scoring attack all evening, featured a balanced and efficient scoring attack all evening long -- as the Bears posted a solid 10 assists on its 25 made baskets. Chianne Gloster and Markayla Holland were the lone players to finish in double-figures, but again, Shawnee State's balance and top-to-bottom production stood out as 10 of the 11 players who played in Tuesday's contest scored.

Defensively, the 43 points that SSU allowed against West Virginia Tech was a season-low for points allowed against River States Conference opponents. The Bears have held an RSC opponent under 50 points three times, and in nine of out its last 12 conference games, the Shawnee State women's basketball program has held its opponent under 60 points, including each of the last four triumphs.

Holland pours in flurry

From the beginning of the game, Shawnee State sophomore guard Markayla Holland was dialed in offensively.

Holland, who finished with a team-high 16 points, scored six points in the first quarter and then added in 10 of Shawnee State's 30 points in the final two quarters of action. Holland went 2-of-3 from the field in each quarter in the first, third and fourth quarters of action and was a pest defensively once again, stealing the basketball twice on lazy inbound passes following baskets by West Virginia Tech -- once in each half -- to help swing momentum, as both of her steals led to an and-one in the opening half and two made free throws in the second half of competition.

For the season, Holland is averaging 12.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game.

Chianne Gloster continues hot spell

Stepping into her long-range shots with confidence, Shawnee State senior forward Chianne Gloster had the hot hand for much of the first three quarters as West Virginia Tech couldn't contain the rangy 6-0 forward.

Gloster ultimately posted 10 of her 15 tallies in the opening half of competition by spraying home two three-pointers in the opening half of competition. The Flint, Mich. talent then knocked down a third trey in the third quarter, helping to kickstart an 18-6 frame that allowed Shawnee State, who held a 37-28 halftime advantage, to continue to push the lead out to its final score.

The talented multi-positional product ultimately finished with 15 points, five rebounds and four steals to post her sixth double-double performance in her last nine contests. Gloster's averages now sit at 8.5 points and 5.6 rebounds for the season.

Additional

Cianna Gloster ended up with another monstrous output with 10 rebounds, eight points and four steals -- and with her 10 rebounds in Tuesday's contest, now sits 17 grabs away from tying the single-season school record of 350 rebounds set by Schera Sampson during the 2012-13 season.

Emily Maynard drained two second-quarter three-pointers to finish with six points while Sanaya Gregory finished with five points and three rebounds. Alexia Deaver filled up the stat sheet with five assists, four points and three rebounds while Jariah Steele and Teyarra Johnson (four points), Amiya Latham (three points) and Jenna Bycznski (two points) rounded out the scoring.

Shawnee State, who has eight victories over its last 10 contests, hosts No. 18 Rio Grande Saturday, Feb. 24 at 4 p.m. to cap off the regular season.
