For the second time in as many games this week, Shawnee State combo talents Cianna and Chianne Gloster came up big -- and, as a result, the Bears were able to exact revenge on yet another River States Conference opponent.
Four days after combining for 28 points and 23 rebounds in a 59-53 road victory over Alice Lloyd (Ky.) where Shawnee State avenged a 71-61 home defeat, the Bears flipped the script on Point Park (Pa.), avenging a 92-78 road loss by taking down the Pioneers, 61-59, at Waller Gymnasium Saturday evening which featured a gritty effort led by the duo again.
Led by the duo's 28 points and 21 rebounds in SSU's two-point win over Point Park, the Bears were able to out-grit the Pioneers -- overcoming shooting marks of 32.1 percent from the field and 22.2 percent from the three-point line to Point Park's 38.2 percent and 26.7 percent marks from both areas by forcing 22 Point Park turnovers and going 21-of-28 from the charity stripe in the contest.
Gloster sisters continue rolling along
They aren't the Mowerys from Detroit, but Cianna Gloster and Chianne Gloster have a chemistry on the court that is undeniable.
Cianna Gloster immediately got out to an outstanding start by scoring 11 of her 15 points in the opening quarter of action, helping the Bears take a 19-9 advantage over the Pioneers after the first 10 minutes of play with her 11-point, six-rebound line on 4-of-4 shooting.
Gloster's shot struggled to fall following the first quarter, but her motor never died -- resulting in the 6-1 forward posting her 15th double-double in Shawnee State's first 25 games. Gloster is now averaging 12.4 rebounds and 12.2 points on 58.1 percent shooting from the floor.
Incredibly, Gloster posted game-highs in FIVE different categories:
- Points (15)
- Rebounds (17)
- Steals (six)
- Assists (four)
- Blocks (three)
As for Chianne Gloster, the senior continues to play her best basketball at the right time. Her 13-point output in Saturday's victory over Point Park marked the fifth time that Gloster reached double-figures in eight games. Gloster is now up to 8.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per contest, and is now third on the Shawnee State roster in scoring and second in rebounds as a result.
Additional
Sanaya Gregory and Markayla Holland each added in eight points for Shawnee State, with Holland posting two steals and a block to help the Bears defensively. Amiya Latham canned both of her three-point attempts in 15 minutes of playing time to add in six points off of the bench, while Jariah Steele went 5-of-6 from the free throw line en route to notching all five of her points as well as grabbing three rebounds in 15 minutes of action herself.
Shawnee State (16-9, 8-6 River States Conference) will have a week off before its next contest as the Bears will take on Ohio Christian (18-6, 9-4 River States Conference) Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. inside the friendly confines of Waller Gymnasium.
