RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- Sometimes it's your day, and sometimes it's not.
However, even in an elimination contest that ultimately resulted in the end of its season, the Shawnee State men's soccer program accomplished a great deal of positives this season -- claiming its second .500 or better campaign in the last three seasons despite a River States Conference Semifinal loss to the Rio Grande RedStorm men's soccer program Saturday afternoon at Evan E. Davis Field in Rio Grande.
In its 8-8-3 finish to the 2024 season, the Shawnee State men's soccer program had 13 different players score a goal, eight players score at least two goals and five players score at least four or more goals over the course of the season. A total of 16 players notched at least one point during the 2024 season.
Six of the players mentioned in the above totals -- Nikos Pontikis, Guilherme Bitencourt, Eric Green, Cameron Thompson, João Coqueti Léo and Théo Cavaleiro Trindade -- were named as All-RSC honorees, the first four as Second-Team All-RSC recipients and the latter pair as Third-Team All-RSC talents.
From a team perspective, Shawnee State overcame early adversity to win three out of its first four contests during the month of September, then went 5-1-2 over an eight-game stretch from Oct. 3 through the River States Conference Quarterfinals on Nov. 6 before being eliminated from postseason play Saturday.
Shawnee State will see three players finish their careers as Bears in Eric Green, Guillermo Conejo Martin and Matt Stam. Green made 157 saves over the course of his Shawnee State career, while Conejo Martin posted eight goals, seven assists and 23 points as a midfield threat. Stam, who returned with an extra season of eligibility left, posted three goals and two assists with the Bears, including two goals this past year.
