PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- The women's basketball program at Shawnee State put together a suffocating defensive performance over the first 14 minutes of a nonconference contest against the Simmons Falcons' women's basketball program as the Bears held Simmons (Ky.) to 1-of-19 shooting during that stretch, opening up a 33-3 lead that ultimately allowed Shawnee State to cruise to a 75-42 victory over the Falcons Friday evening on the first day of the three-day Shawnee State Classic, which is being held at Waller Gymnasium in Portsmouth.
The Bear Paws
For the second contest in a row, Shawnee State controlled the so-called 'little things,' as the Bears held Simmons to just 22.6 percent shooting for the contest (14-of-62), including a 9.1 percent (2-of-22) mark from three-point range. Shawnee State also controlled the glass as the Bears owned a plus-20 advantage in the rebounding department (49-29), and posted 17 assists on its 25 made shots at the offensive end of the floor to open up the lead quickly.
Bear Burst
Throughout the first 14 minutes of Friday's affair, Shawnee State wasted no time blitzing Simmons.
Over the course of those 14 minutes alone, 10 different Shawnee State players reached the scoring column as Shawnee State posted nine assists as a team during that 14-minute stretch, all while going 12-of-22 (54.5 percent) to start the game.
Defensively, Shawnee State hounded Simmons' leading scorer, Morgan Defoor, all game long. Defoor, who came in averaging 22.2 points and 5.3 rebounds, went just 1-of-13 from the floor en route to nabbing six points and four rebounds Friday evening. Defoor scored four of her six points on free throws, two of which came on a Shawnee State technical foul.
Same Ol' G
Cueing up the 'Same Ol' G' hit by famed R&B artist Ginuwine, Shawnee State senior forward Cianna Gloster was the Same Ol' G in Friday's win in terms of her production on the court -- nabbing her 20th career double-double in her 32nd contest at Shawnee State and her second in as many contests to begin the 2024 season.
Always a reliable talent in terms of her hustle and production as a result, Gloster went a perfect 3-of-3 from the field in the first quarter for a six-point total, then collected eight of her 10 rebounds in the second half to go along with seven points in the half to post a 13-point, 10-rebound statline on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. Gloster also added in two assists and two steals to boot.
