Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Addy's 16th career goal, Coriell's 85th minute top-shelf penalty kick lifts Bears in 2-1, come-from-behind victory over Bearcats

OWENSBORO, Ky. -- The women's soccer program at Shawnee State is gathering momentum at the right time.

They're also finding different ways to win in doing so.

In Thursday's triumph over West Virginia Tech, Shawnee State controlled the pace of play throughout much of the first half before holding on to take a 2-1 victory.

However, Saturday afternoon's contest over Brescia (Ky.) saw the Bears find a different way to win.

Trailing by a 1-0 margin following the first half of play against the Bearcats after being slightly outshot by a 7-5 margin in a first half that was played straight up outside of a Maci Uffelman goal in the 22nd minute, Shawnee State -- in a gritty performance -- rallied from behind by scoring two goals over the final 31 minutes of a River States Conference matchup against Brescia.

A 59th-minute salvo by Haynna Addy evened the match at one goal apiece, then, Annie Coriell, after a call in the box, capitalized with her second goal of the week on an 85th minute penalty kick to give the Bears a thrilling, come-from-behind 2-1 win over the Bearcats Saturday afternoon in a River States Conference matchup that was held at Kamuf Park in Owensboro, Ky.

Despite trailing by a 1-0 margin at the end of the opening half, Shawnee State was able to come from behind through sheer will -- as the Bears posted a 10-4 advantage in shots in the second half en route to claiming a 15-11 overall lead in that category.

The victory is not only Shawnee State's second straight, but moves the Bears into increasingly more favorable conference positioning heading into the season's final two weeks of play -- as SSU sits 2-2-1 overall in River States Conference competition with the victory and 2-7-1 overall.

Addy wreaks havoc with speed, quickness

Throughout her career, Shawnee State senior Haynna Addy has fought through various setbacks through injuries -- and still has made her presence felt throughout her time in a SSU uniform in doing so.

After the Bears just missed capitalizing on three shot attempts within a minute's time between the 55th and 56th minutes of play as Lucie Ashkettle's and Izzy Riddle's shots were saved while Alex Hurn's shot was blocked, Addy turned right around in the 59th minute -- and made the Bearcats pay.

Perhaps catching Brescia falling asleep on the backline, Addy's relentless play up front allowed the senior to get behind the defense for her first goal of the season as No. 17 finished with a sidewinding goal that the talented Zane Trace graduate converted.

The goal was not only the 16th of Addy's career, but also officially allowed the talented Ross County product to claim at least one goal in every season of her collegiate playing eligibility. The 2023 Second-Team All-RSC talent has 16 goals, four assists and 36 points for her Shawnee State career.

Third Time's a Charm: Coriell cashes in

Having previously taken two shot attempts in the second half -- with one being saved by Brescia's Ashby Greenwell and another missing wide -- the missed shots didn't deter sophomore captain Annie Coriell.

While fighting for position in the box, a call was made against Brescia that gave Coriell an opportunity to give Shawnee State the go-ahead goal on a penalty kick. A talented player with strong Southeast District credentials in her own right like her teammate mentioned above in Addy, Coriell punctuated the comeback victory with a top-shelf bullet that beat Greenwell off to the left side for her second goal in as many games and in the week while capping off the second straight road win for the Bears in the process.

The goal is Coriell's sixth of her young Shawnee State career -- and her 13th point overall.
