Sometimes, simply returning home is the best medicine to solve woes where one simply has to play his or her way out of a shooting slump.
The women's basketball program at Shawnee State University did just that Tuesday evening in an emphatic manner.
Never trailing throughout a 40-minute affair against the Indiana-East Redwolves' women's basketball program, the Bears had seven players score at least six points or more -- with Markayla Holland and Cianna Gloster posting standout efforts once again and Chianne Gloster, along with Amiya Latham, joining the aforementioned duo in double-figures as the Bears took home a 19-point victory over the Redwolves in Waller Gymnasium.
Shawnee State (11-7, 4-4 RSC) dominated every scope of the statline in the convincing win, as the Bears shot 28-of-64 from the field (43.8 percent), 6-of-16 from three-point range (37.5 percent), and 12-of-15 from the free throw line (80 percent) while holding IU-East, who fell to 8-9 overall and 3-4 in the RSC, to a 20-of-63 mark (31.7 percent) from the field and a 5-of-27 showing from three-point range (18.5 percent). The Bears' collective defensive effort allowed Shawnee State to hold Taylor Ferris -- IU-East's leading scorer at 20.6 points per game coming in -- to just eight points on 3-of-13 shooting from the floor. Ferris also turned the basketball over four times as Shawnee State continued to swarm IU-East throughout the contest.
Gloster twins show competitive grit
Behind a strong effort from senior sisters Cianna Gloster and Chianne Gloster, Shawnee State simply proved to be unreleting as the pair's work on the glass led to a massive plus-24 rebounding advantage (45-21) in favor of the Bears.
Cianna Gloster, who notched her 10th double-double in Tuesday's victory by notching 13 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, was simply unstoppable in the second quarter of play. Establishing deep post position early on, Gloster nabbed nine points and six rebounds in the second quarter of play alone on 4-of-4 shooting from the field as the entire Shawnee State roster made it a mission to get No. 20 cooking down low. Gloster was also incredible on the defensive end -- as her six blocks, including three in the first quarter alone, essentially changed the contest.
Already holding strong averages of 12.3 points and 11.8 rebounds per game on 60.1 percent shooting from the field coming into the game, Gloster actually raised those averages to 12.4 points and 11.9 rebounds on 60.5 percent shooting and holds averages of 2.4 steals and 1.4 blocks per contest.
Chianne Gloster, meanwhile, arguably put together one of her best performances of the season in Tuesday's 19-point win, notching 10 points and 10 rebounds behind her sister's 13 and 13 effort. Like her sister, No. 5 had a strong second frame herself, notching six points and five rebounds in the frame -- ultimately leading to Cianna and Chianne combining for 15 of Shawnee State's 20 points in the second quarter as well as 11 of Shawnee State's 13 offensive rebounds in the frame.
Gregory, Holland, Latham productive in different ways
Behind the main duo, Sanaya Gregory, Markayla Holland and Amiya Latham were effective in different ways -- which helped keep IU-East's defensive unit honest throughout the contest.
Gregory and Holland, who did a terrific job all game long of getting Shawnee State into sets in a patient, yet decisive manner, combined for 19 points and nine assists.
Gregory, in particular, enjoyed an efficient game that many coaches of point guards would envy by notching her eight points on just three official shots from the field while dishing out six assists to boot. Gregory went a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe and only turned the ball over once in the Bears' victory.
Holland, who continues to produce on a game-by-game basis, posted seven of her 11 points in the opening quarter to help give the Bears a 21-16 advantage after the opening quarter. Her efforts allowed Shawnee State to maintain a two-point lead throughout the entirety of the contest.
Latham, meanwhile, had a strong opening quarter herself. The freshman wing -- the definition of a long-range bomber -- scored Shawnee State's first six points on two fluid, in-rhythm three-pointers within the contest's first two-and-a-half minutes that helped jettison the Bears out to an 8-2 lead to start the game.
Additional
Jariah Steele -- who added in four rebounds -- and Teyarra Johnson -- who had two nifty finishes in showing off a nice layup barrage -- finished with six points apiece while Lexi Deaver and Emily Maynard added in three points and Jenna Bycznski two for Shawnee State.
The Bears get a six-day layoff before returning to action Monday evening with a return trip to play Wilberforce after defeating the Bulldogs 56-37 earlier in the year. Game time is set for 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22.
