Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

SSU WBB drops 66-51 decision at Oakland City (Ind.)

The women's basketball program at Shawnee State got reliable outputs once again from Shawnee State senior forward Cianna Gloster and Shawnee State sophomore Markayla Holland, and also held the Oakland City Mighty Oaks' women's basketball program to just 32.7 percent shooting from the field, but 24 turnovers and a 24.2 percent shooting mark from the field proved to be too much to overcome as the Bears fell to the Mighty Oaks, 66-51, in a River States Conference contest that was held in Oakland City Saturday afternoon.

Shawnee State, who trailed by margins of 12-5 and 19-12 between the first 11 minutes of action, ultimately worked Oakland City's early advantage down to a scant 34-32 margin with 8:02 to play in the third quarter of competition. However, SSU couldn't get any closer as the Bears committed 14 of their 24 turnovers in the second half, gave up 26 points off of turnovers and were outrebounded by a plus-11 mark (49-38) in the contest.

Ci. Gloster powers her way to another double-double

For the ninth time in 17 contests, Shawnee State senior forward Cianna Gloster posted a double-double -- helping head the charge with an efficient performance Saturday afternoon against Oakland City.

Gloster, who scored seven points, five rebounds, two steals and two blocks in the fourth quarter alone on 2-of-3 shooting from the field, finished with her 14-point, 12-rebound statline on just eight shots from the floor -- draining five of them for a 62.1 percent shooting clip. The Flint, Mich. native also posted three blocks and a pair of steals in the contest.

Gloster's production continues to be consistent -- as the 6-1 forward is averaging 12.2 points and 11.8 rebounds per game on 60.1 percent shooting from the floor.

Holland stays on the attack

Despite playing a team-high 35 minutes, Shawnee State sophomore Markayla Holland never quit attacking -- as the 5-11 native of Waterford, Mich. kept putting pressure on the Oakland City defense the entire game.

Holland ultimately scored 10 points in both halves -- including a 10-point, four-steal, one-block statline in the second half that allowed SSU to trim a 59-42 deficit at the 6:03 mark to a 62-50 count with 3:21 to go in the second half of play.

The combo guard/forward has now hit at least 20 points or more in four games this season -- and has scored at least 19 points or more in five contests.

Additional

Sanaya Gregory (seven points, three rebounds, two assists) and Jariah Steele (seven points, three rebounds) aided the cause for Shawnee State by combining to go a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line for the Bears (10-7, 3-4 RSC).

Shawnee State is scheduled to be back in action Tuesday, Jan. 16 when the Bears take on Indiana University-East at 5:30 p.m. inside the friendly confines of Waller Gymnasium in Portsmouth.
