The Shawnee State Women's Soccer team welcomed the University of Rio Grande Thursday night for their first conference game. In a very close game, the two teams tied at two after 90 minutes.
The Bears started the game with an early shot from Brianna Brudy, but the keeper for the Redstorm goalie Morgan Nutter saved the shot from entering the back of the net. Shortly after that, Brudy drove through the middle of the center backs and found her way to the box where she would take the shot and score the first goal for the Bears. Just a few seconds after the goal, the Redstorms would have a shot on goal by Amora Albano, but Julie Derenemesnil for the Bears saved it. Shawnee controlled the rest of the first half and entered halftime up 1-0.
The second half would be a battle between both teams, but SSU found their second goal early in the second half after Lucie Ashkettle took the shot inside the box and put it on the left side of the net. The middle part of the second half saw no goals for either team until the Redstorms found their way to the goal with just five minutes left in the game. The Rio Grande scored twice in the 85' and 88' minutes tying the Bears 2-2, in their first conference test of the season.
The Bears will hit the road on Saturday to Indiana to face the Cougars from IU Kokomo. The game starts at 1 PM.
