Winning three games in a row up to this point, the Shawnee State women's basketball hosted the 21st team in the nation, the University of Pikeville. Pulling off the upset at home, the Battle of the Bears was won by Shawnee, 86-81.
The first quarter saw the Bears battle for any kind of advantage, but Shawnee controlled the lead after two minutes. For nearly all of the second quarter, however, SSU's offense exploded. Over the span of the period the Bears from Shawnee missed only four shots, while their counterpart Bears had just four makes from the field, en route to a 34-8 run in
Opening the second half, it was a near replica of what Shawnee had accomplished in the first, but in favor of Pikeville. Bringing the lead all the way down to a single point, it took a massive effort from Kambrayia Elzy and company to ensure the Bears won. All the way down to the final seconds it was a single-possession game; Shawnee however was able to pull away in the end and knock off the #21 team in the nation.
- Elzy finished as the games leading scorer with 25 points, as well as dishing out 3 assists
- Marnae Holland played her part, scoring 20 points and grabbing 12 rebounds
- Jada Johnson, Karimah Nix, and Tanisia Murphy all played pivotal roles in the game, adding a combination for all but 2 of the Bear's remaining 41 points
The Bears will have another short layoff before returning home next Thursday against Campbellsville. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
