The Shawnee State women's basketball program got strong efforts from senior sisters Cianna and Chianne Gloster, who combined for 37 points and 24 rebounds between them, but the Bears weren't able to claim victory as Shawnee State was held to a 35.4 percent clip (23-for-65) from the floor in a 10-point setback to the Alice Lloyd Eagles' women's basketball program Friday evening at Waller Gymnasium in Portsmouth.
Shawnee State, who trailed by a 30-14 count with 5:29 to play in the second quarter of action, went on a 14-4 spurt to cut Alice Lloyd's lead to a six-point gap, 34-28, with 8:01 to play in the third quarter as five different players scored during what ended up being arguably the best stretch of basketball that the Bears played all game. Shawnee State also cut the lead to six two more times at 36-30 with 7:08 to play in the third frame and 43-37 with 2:06 to go in the quarter, but couldn't cut the lead below three possessions over the rest of the way as the Bears fell to 6-2 overall and 0-1 in River States Conference action while Alice Lloyd improved to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in RSC play.
Cianna Gloster continues double-double output
Efficient and productive as the day is long, senior forward Cianna Gloster continued to bring high energy through Tuesday's contest.
With seven rebounds and six points at the halftime break, Gloster -- with her entire unit needing a lift -- attempted to do just that in the second half, amassing 13 points and 10 rebounds in the final two quarters of action and eight points and seven rebounds in the third quarter alone. She shot 9-for-14 from the floor in the contest to boot.
For the season, Gloster continues to average fantastic numbers on very high efficiency, notching 13.9 rebounds and 13.6 points per game on 59.5 percent shooting from the field. She is in position to hold the single-season rebounding mark at Shawnee State if her average stands up over the course of the season.
Chianne Gloster takes wheel in fourth quarter
Trying to draw Shawnee State back into the contest, Cianna's sister, Chianne, did her fair share of heavy lifting as well.
With the Bears down by a 49-40 margin after three quarters of action, Gloster helped provide a lift offensively as the senior scored 11 of her 17 points in the final frame of competition. Chianne scored nine consecutive Shawnee State points from the 3:28 to the 1:13 mark of the second half to allow the Bears to hang around in the contest.
Gloster also added in seven rebounds and a block to go along with her 17 points, which came on 6-for-11 shooting from the floor.
Additional
Sanaya Gregory supplied eight points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals on 3-for-7 shooting for the Bears in Tuesday's setback.
A River States Conference matchup with Point Park (Pa.) in Pittsburgh, Pa. awaits Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
