The women's basketball program at Shawnee State continued its excellent play Monday evening against Campbellsville-Harrodsburg with Shawnee State not only placing five scorers in double-figures but having a player set a career-high for the third straight game in the process.
Amiya Latham's 18 points off of six three-pointers and Cianna Gloster's 17 points and 11 rebounds on a perfect 8-for-8 from the floor were just part of the story, as Shawnee State jumped out to a 25-2 lead and led from start to finish in the Bears' 102-34 victory over the Pioneers Monday evening in a nonconference contest that was held at Waller Gymnasium.
Overview
From start to finish, Shawnee State showed no competitive arrogance against Campbellsville-Harrodsburg.
The Bears allowed just one field goal over the contest's 14:01 of action en route to jumping out to a 37-4 second quarter lead, and held the Pioneers to a 23.5 percent clip from the floor and a five percent mark (1-for-20) from three-point range. The Bears owned a plus-22 mark on the glass, and offensively, posted 26 assists on 39 made baskets while committing just 12 turnovers to post more than a 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio as a team.
Latham lights it up from three
In 24 minutes off of the bench, Amiya Latham wasted no time letting it fly from deep.
The freshman from Wickliffe, Ohio, who is shooting at a highly proficient 40 percent clip from distance, knocked down six out of her 13 long-distance connections en route to a career-high 18 points. Latham rose her own scoring average for the season to 8.8 points per contest and is also averaging 2.2 rebounds per outing on the wing.
Boogie ball built to last
Complete with high-energy plays as well as efficient touches when they were available, Shawnee State senior forward Cianna Gloster was again terrific Monday evening.
The senior, who amassed 17 points and 11 rebounds, posted her fourth double-double in six games in a SSU uniform and, in doing so, shot a perfect 8-for-8 from the field while also adding in a pair of steals and a block.
Humble in her attitude but loud with her play, Gloster is putting up 14.8 points, 13.3 rebounds, 2.2 steals and a block per game on 67.3 percent shooting from the field.
Holland continues efficient start
Like the previously mentioned Cianna Gloster, Markayla Holland is also a player who does not lack a motor.
Having scored no less than eight points in a game over her six games of action, Holland added in 14 points on her most efficient offensive production of the year by going 7-of-10 from the floor. The sophomore talent added in three blocks and two steals in Monday's contest, and in addition to her 13.3 points per game for the season, Holland is also averaging 3.8 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.5 blocks per game for the Bears.
Efficiency shows up and down the roster
Even past the highest-scoring trio, there were excellent efforts across the board. Jariah Steele (12 points) and Chianne Gloster (11 points) combined to go 8-of-11 from the field, 7-of-8 from the free throw line, added in nine rebounds and posted six assists to just three turnovers between them.
Emily Maynard posted nine points and five rebounds while also leading Shawnee State with three steals, Sanaya Gregory dropped in six points and a team-high six assists to just two turnovers for a three-to-one assist-to-turnover ratio, and Maelynn Howell posted six points and three rebounds in just 15 minutes of work while going 3-of-6 from the field.
Of all of the performances, however, Teyarra Johnson's stat-sheet-stuffing effort was arguably just as impressive as anybody else's.
Johnson not only posted nine points, seven rebounds and five assists to two turnovers for a 2.5-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio, but did so while shooting 4-of-6 from the field and adding in easily one of the most impressive finishes of the evening with an up-and-under finish late in the second half of competition.
