The Shawnee State women's basketball looked to split their season series with Bethel University when they hosted them on Saturday. The Bears took part in a defensive showdown and came out the victors, winning 64-51.
If fans were looking for a defensive battle, this second matchup between Shawnee State and Bethel had everything to offer. There was seemingly a lid on the basket for the first half, though the Bears found themselves in the lead at the half, with the score reading just 31-27.
In the second half, Shawnee State began to pull away, though there would still be a lack of a scoring outburst from either side. One bright spot that could be found in an otherwise low-scoring game, however, was the return of Tanisia Murphy from what had been somewhat of a scoring drought for her standards. In the second half, she added 15 points, and with the help of Karimah Nix off the bench, the Bears held on to win 64-51.
- Murphy led all players with 17 points in her return to form
- Celebrating her 1,000 career points milestone before the game, Marnae Holland added a double-double to her already impressive season, scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 boards
- Avenging their prior loss to the Wildcats, the Bears now have 5 wins within the conference
The Bears will hit the road for just the second time this season when they continue their conference play at the University of Tennessee Southern next Thursday. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on January 26th.
