Shawnee State took on the University of Pikeville Saturday for the first two games of a four-game series. SSU would take both of Saturday's games for the sweep. The first game was a stalemate until it went into the 8th inning, and the second game was a show of offensive firepower from the SSU Bears.
Game 1
Emma Wargel would take to the circle to open up game one for SSU, pitching five innings, allowing three hits with no runs. Cameryn Davidson took over in the 6th and would close the game out, also allowing three hits with no runs and adding two strikeouts. The game would be a race to see who could get the first run to cross the plate, but nobody would accomplish this during regular play. In the top of the 8th inning, Rylie Hughes would smash a single into left field to bring Brittani Wolfenbarker across, and Ashley Fite would ground out to the shortstop and allow Ashton Rankin to score as well. SSU would shut out UPike to win, 2-0.
Game 2
Cassie Schaefer would throw a complete game in the second matchup, limiting UPike to two runs off of five hits while adding six strikeouts. SSU would come alive in the 4th inning and tack on runs for the rest of the game. Shawnee State ended the game with sixteen hits, but Mackenzie Hale and Rylie Hughes would lead the team with two RBIs each. Shawnee State would almost clinch a shutout in both games, but UPike managed to get two across the plate in the final at-bat. SSU won 9-2.
Shawnee State will take on UPike again tomorrow, April 3, for a DH with the first pitch slated for noon.
