Shawnee State opened up Mid-South Conference play this afternoon as they took on the Phoenix of Cumberland University. The Phoenix were too much for the Bears to handle in game one, taking the victory 15-2.
From the first pitch of the game, the Phoenix had something figured out on Bears pitcher Kyle Wisniewski tagging Wisniewski for six runs in the three innings. The Bears offensively tried to battle back, Noah Sniadach had two singles on the day with one of them being resulting in him scoring off a Damion Coleman double down the right-field line in the second inning. George Duran would come to the plate in the second inning hitting a towering home run to left field giving the Bears two runs. That would be the only runs that SSU would put on the board as Phoenix pitching calms the Bears the remainder of the game, giving them the victory 15-2 after seven innings.
The Bears will be back at Branch Rickey Park tomorrow afternoon as they finish the series with Cumberland University. The first pitch of the afternoon will be at 12 PM.
