Bears Split Conference Opener

Shawnee opens up Mid-South Conference play against Cumberland University this afternoon. After the games had finished the Bears fell 7-3 in game one but beat the Phoenix in game two 2-1.

Game 1

Only being able to put two runs on Cumberland through the seven-inning game on a hand full of hits the Phoenix pitching was too much to handle for the Bears. On the opposite side of the ball, the Phoenix were able to find the holes in the Shawnee defense getting the runners on base and finding ways to score them. The Bears battled all the way till the final out but fell short falling 7-3 to the Phoenix.

Game 2

The momentum the Bears found at the end of game one was not wasted and used in the second game of the afternoon. Cameryn Davidson took the mound for the Bears and pitched a gem. She earns the complete game win, allowing onlu 1 run giving up 4 hits, while striking out 5. The Bears got on the board early scoring a single run in the first. Ashley Fite started it with a double to right. Ashton Rankin reached second on an error moving Fite to third. Aleeya Adkins was able to knock Fite in with a single to give SSU the 1-0 lead. It became a pitchers duel setting up the excting late in heroics for Davidson. With the score tied at 1, SSU would pick up the winning run in the bottom of the sixth. Mackenzie Hale started it with a double into the right field gap. She advanced to third on Andrea Little's ground out to second. Hale scored the game-winning run off of Cameryn Davidson's single up the middle. After knocking in the winning run, Davidson was able to get the final 3 outs, giving the Bears their first MSC win 2-1.
