The Shawnee State women's soccer team would face off against the Georgetown Tigers in their opening-round matchup of the MSC tournament. In a repeat of the season finale, the Bears would come out 2-1 victors and move on to the next round.
In a similar fashion to their last matchup, Shawnee would look to control the ball and contain the pace of the Georgetown attack. With 15 shots in the first half, it would only be a matter of time until the Bears would strike. Sophia Martinez would deliver a corner into the box, connecting with Claire Favre, sending the home side ahead just eleven minutes in. SSU would look like the dominant side, relentlessly pressing the GC side, but struggling to find another goal in the first half for all their effort. The scoreboard would read 1-0 in favor of the #8-seeded Bears.
The second half would look much the same as the first, as the Bears would score early again and double their lead. This time it would be Briana Brudy taking the ball on a fast break and looking for the goal, before being pulled to the ground by a Georgetown defender. Stepping up to the penalty spot would be Daan Louwerse, kicking a thunderous goal past the outstretched keeper and giving the Bears what would ultimately be the winning goal. Within the same minute, the Tigers would play a ball over the home side's defense and claw one goal back, not enough to keep Shawnee out of the next round.
- Goals for Favre and Louwerse
- Assist for Martinez
- 17 shots on goal
The victory will send the Bears into the quarter-finals where they will travel to face off against the #1-seeded University of the Cumberlands. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. this Friday.
