The softball program at Shawnee State put together a valiant effort Friday evening against No. 16-ranked Freed-Hardeman, but saw its season come to a close as the Bears fell to the Lions by 7-1 and 8-0 margins in the Mid-South Conference's Opening Round in Henderson, Tenn.
Ashton Rankin, who tripled to lead off the sixth inning, scored on Brooke Webb's RBI groundout in the same frame for Shawnee State's lone run in the first contest. Seniors Kalle Coleman (infield single in seventh inning in opener) and Mo Wolansky (single to center field in fourth inning in second contest) rounded out Shawnee State's efforts.
With the losses, Shawnee State will bid their farewells to Kalle Coleman, Mo Wolansky, and Bailey Kemp. Coleman and Wolansky, both everyday starters in the infield, started in every season of their SSU careers (two and four, respectively). Kemp played in 66 career games with 46 career starts in the infield herself.
Academically, Wolansky (3.4 GPA), Kemp (3.57 GPA) and Coleman (3.97 GPA) will all graduate in May. The former duo will hold bachelor's degrees in exercise science while the latter will have a bachelor's degree in accounting.
